South Bexar County Community with new construction

Cushioned by trees and farmland, Highland Oaks is 25 miles from San Antonio. Driving south from the city on U.S. 281, Highland Oaks is a rural community formed of various neighborhoods. Wooded cul-de-sacs lead to new construction and working homesteads offering expansive acreage. Mom-and-pop restaurants, flea markets and farms are easy to come by in this South Bexar County community. The school district's STEM programs and the surrounding youth recreation draw families looking to upsize. Residents are within 15 miles of the historic Mission Espada National Historical Park and big box stores. "South of 1604 is one of the fastest growing areas in San Antonio. We will see many homebuyers coming to the area in coming years," says Ricardo Hernandez, a Realtor with EXP Realty who sells houses in the area.

New construction and established homes

Driving past large tracts of trees and farmland, street names like Black Willow and Tearose lead locals home in Highland Oaks. Big oaks and pines shade ranch-style homes, mobile trailers and farmhouses. Long, unpaved dirt driveways and wooden fences surround thicks of shrubbery. These houses range from $135,000 for over 1,200 square feet to $250,000 for 2,100 square feet. New construction and semi-custom-built designs mingle among established residences and are priced over $350,000. Many locals have lived in their properties for generations, resting on expansive acreage and used as working homesteads. There aren't any sidewalks in the community, and locals often see woodland creatures. "There is so much new construction and enough land to develop more," Hernandez says.
