An opportunity for first-time homebuyers

A quiet neighborhood off Interstate 410, Hillcrest is ideal for those looking to buy their first home. The neighborhood's sunny streets are lined with sidewalks, and houses tend to be single-story. "It's an entry-level area to buy a house because it's centrally located. You can get anywhere in the city in 20 to 30 minutes," says RJ Reyes, a Realtor with Keller Williams San Antonio, who has been selling real estate in the city for 21 years.

Neighborhood offers budget-friendly housing

Homes in Hillcrest start at around $250,000 and can reach up to about $450,000. The sun-drenched streets typically have little tree cover, and lawns tend to be well-kept. You'll generally spot ranch-style homes in this neighborhood, but Spanish revival and split levels are mixed in. Brick and stone are popular building materials in the area. When homes have lawns, they tend to be well-kept, but the Texas heat leaves many lawns in the area packed with dirt or lined with rocks.

Public park has lake and pool

To get some fresh air, locals head to Woodlawn Lake Park. "Woodlawn Lake is where most people go, if they want to visit a park," Reyes says. In addition to the lake in the park's center, you'll also find a public pool, gym, sports fields and courts around the park.

It's home to Target, Burlington, Starbucks and other businesses if you need to get groceries, clothes or a cup of coffee. There are also a variety of fast-casual restaurants at the mall, like Rico's Burgers. "There are some nice shops in that area," says Reyes. You can grab a bite to eat at Jim's, a local diner that serves classic club sandwiches, French toast and breakfast platters. This cheery joint has a stucco and brick exterior and a towering sign beside it that mimics the shape of the restaurant's triangular roof. The interior is packed with booths and tables, and it's a popular weekend spot to grab a breakfast plate. Dave and Busters is also a popular spot for locals to spend time on weekends.
