No two buildings look the same in Jefferson

In Jefferson, every building is eye-catching – including the local high school and grocery store. Bordered by century-old Woodlawn Lake Park on the south side, the artsy Deco District to the east and anchored by the eclectic Monticello Park Historic District, Jefferson represents decades of San Antonio’s history. The history of the area is not only kept alive by the diverse Tudor, Spanish and Art Deco buildings, but by the people who live there. “We have a community built by a strong network of neighbors who truly care for and look out for each other,” says Jason Vasquez, a Jefferson native of over 40 years and the Vice President of the Jefferson Neighborhood Association. “We are also a community of many generations who know someone who grew up with someone in your family or went to school with someone you know.” Outside of the community’s colorful streets, Downtown San Antonio is less than 5 miles away on Interstate 10, keeping the rest of the city easily within reach.

Woodlawn Lake Park lights the way

Jefferson’s history starts at Woodlawn Lake Park on Cincinnati Avenue. This space has been in the community for nearly 200 years and is packed with a dog park, public pool and fishing pond. The namesake lake is accented with a signature striped lighthouse that rises over the park’s picnic areas. The dog park in Woodlawn Lake Park connects to the trailhead for the Alazan Creek Trail, and dedicated hikers can trek 4 miles down this path to reach the larger Apache Creek Greenway.

The retro, artsy Deco District

Jefferson runs along the Deco District, a corridor named for its numerous Art Deco buildings. Even the local H-E-B is in a pastel pink and chrome-lined building. Neighborhood staples like Panaderia Jimenez & Coffee Shop, an authentic Mexican bakery, and El Paraiso Ice Cream, which is known for its paleta fruit bars, also make the Deco District a destination. The district is home to a growing art community, evidenced by music venues like The Starlighter on Fredericksburg Road and several colorful murals dotting the street. Network for Young Artists (NYA) hosts the Deco Fiesta every spring, featuring a lineup of local musicians.

Eclectic homes in Monticello Park and Jefferson Conservation District

The Monticello Park Historic District is best known for its diverse architecture and shares many neighborhood resources like schools and parks with the Jefferson area. Properties in Monticello Park include Art Moderne, Spanish Eclectic and Tudor Revival structures that were largely built between the 1920s and 1940s. Homes from the 1950s and 1960s fill the rest of Jefferson, and simpler styles like Craftsman cottages and brick ranch-style houses are common in the Jefferson Conservation District. Properties under 1,500 square feet tend to range between $200,000 to $300,000, while a larger home can start at $400,000 and reach up to $700,000. Regardless of a home’s age, size or price, it will likely be surrounded by well-maintained streets and gardens kept up by an active community. “We have groups who cycle around the neighborhood and walk together around the neighborhood. In the past, we have held National Night Out gatherings and Fiesta block parties,” Vasquez says. Jefferson has a 4 on the CAP Index Crime Score, putting it in line with the national average.
