Neighborhood in San Antonio, Texas
Bexar County 78228, 78237
Located on the south side of Culebra Road from Saint Mary’s University is an established community with a strong foundation to support the many new things happening there.
The neighborhood of Loma Park is a largely residential grid built inside of a square of major roads with some streets ending in cul-de-sacs. Within the grid is a litany of 1950s one-story ranch houses, bungalows and split-levels with yards that reach out to sidewalks wide enough for dogwalkers to pass by children. Many of the homes feature modest yard space and driveways with separated garages, often selling for around $217,500, while newer builds might feature connected garages and go for above $300,000.
Like much of Texas, Loma Park uses an independent school district, which affords parents the option to choose where to send their kids. For those seeking a traditional education, Edgewood Independent School District includes Loma Park and L.B. Johnson Elementary Schools, both of which score above the state average on Niche.com for teachers with 3+ years of experience. Meanwhile, middle schoolers can opt to ride the bus to E T Wrenn or Gus Garcia Middle Schools, while older students attend Memorial High School, located in the adjacent neighborhood of Memorial Heights. But for those seeking an alternative education path, the nearby Edgewood Fine Arts Academy is an option for parents interested in enrolling their children in STEM, art, or business classes.
After school or work, residents can unwind with a long hike along any of the trails on the banks of Zarzamora Creek. For those seeking a shorter stroll, it can be found at one of the two parks in the area: Alderete and Monterrey Parks. Both feature paved walking trails as well as colorful and well-maintained playgrounds and wide-open fields for any number of sports, but mostly soccer and softball.
Monterrey Park is larger and has a bit more going on, with its own pool and hard surface tennis courts. There’s also a community center, named after radio personality Sonny Melendrez. The Center hosts a ton of free events and classes every week ranging from gardening to gaming, as well as rec sports such as volleyball.
“We just built eight pickleball courts that are brand new,” said center director Alex Charles. “It’s going to cater to the community and it’s big for the Seaworld and [Texas State Highway Loop] 1604-area especially because they’ve had to travel all the way downtown to play.”
A place to cool down after a tense match on the courts won’t be hard to find. Latin cuisine is in no short supply here. An array of options from south of the border exist, such as Barrio Barista Coffeehouse, which serves horchata lattes and more. Those seeking a domestic cuisine type can try the creamed corn at Zeke’s BBQ Smokehouse, which locals swear by.
Whether you’re looking to play pickleball, take a walk, or spend the night out, Loma Park is an already strong community looking forward to many new developments and opportunities.
