"It's an older neighborhood where many residents are renting," says Juanita Ortega, Realtor with Premier Realty Group and city resident. Just 6 miles from downtown, the neighborhood is home to several community centers and a network of trails that connect downtown. "We have some awesome hiking trails you may not hear about, but they're great," she says. The local school district offers programs focused on college prep and dual language instruction, while the nearby library is a gathering spot for weekly clubs.

Sonny Melendrez Community Center has an outdoor swimming pool
The Westside Creeks Greenway System runs through the neighborhood, offering 10 miles of paved trails for residents to bike or walk downtown while avoiding busy streets. These trails connect to several nearby parks, all within a short distance. Monterrey Park is the largest and includes the Sonny Melendrez Community Center, hosting art and sports classes. The park also has tennis courts, baseball diamonds, playgrounds with shaded canopies and an outdoor public swimming pool that opens in June. On the north side, the Memorial Library on Culebra Road is where residents meet for walking clubs, LEGO building sessions and painting classes throughout the week.

Memorial High School offers P-TECH and CTE courses
The Edgewood Independent School District serves around 8,000 students and has a C grade on Niche. Roosevelt Dual Language Academy has a C-minus grade and instructs in English and Spanish. Gus Garcia University School is a charter school with a C-minus grade. It partners with Texas A&M University-San Antonio to prepare students for high school. Memorial High School has a C-plus grade and offers the Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH), where students can earn an associate degree and career and technical education programs in STEM fields like phlebotomy and health science.
North of the neighborhood, St. Mary's University is a small private liberal arts school and the oldest Catholic university in Texas.

Neighbors come together during National Night Out
Locals celebrate the five-day Tejano Conjunto Festival in May at Rosedale Park. Organized by the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, it's the longest-running event of its kind in the U.S. San Antonio's Día De Los Muertos Festival happens in late October, honoring the Day of the Dead through folk music, dancing and food. Dieciséis de Septiembre marks Mexico’s independence from Spain with a parade, filling Brazos and Guadalupe streets.
The Neighborhood Place is a well-used community center that helps locals receive free or low-cost job training and economic support. It also hosts events year-round, including National Night Out in October.

Memorial Heights is split into north and south sides by the Westside Creeks Greenway System, a network of trails that connect alongside several creeks. Homes were built between the 1950's and 1990's, although a few were constructed after 2010. They range from 760 to 1,400 square feet. Minimal traditional and ranch-style houses come with brick or clapboard siding and offer paved driveways with carports. Most neighbors have chain-link or wrought-iron fences with modest yards, and there are sidewalks. Many residences have been lived in for generations and need renovations and updates. Home prices can go between $110,000 to $165,000, and empty lots from $30,000 to over $240,000.

The neighborhood is within 5 miles of Interstate 10 and Loop 410, connecting to I-35. Downtown is 6 miles east via Culebra Road, or locals can take the bus. San Antonio International Airport is 11 miles north, and Baptist Medical Center is downtown.
The neighborhood's CAP Index crime score is 6 out of 10, above the national average of 4. However, the San Antonio Police Department's West Substation and SAFFE Unit serve the inner Westside. "The school ratings and crime levels concern some people, but single people or couples who aren't as worried about those things are drawn to the older homes with their charm," Ortega says.
Loop 410 offers those in Memorial Heights a quick access route to the rest of the city.
Memorial Heights residents can hop on the VIA bus system and access most of San Antonio.
