Ample acreage in the heart of Northwest Side
Oakland Estates is a semi-rural community of subdivisions and multiacre lots, which may surprise people since it's in San Antonio's growing Northwest side. It's common for residents to see deer, rabbits and foxes roaming through the area. Plotted initially in 1926 as part of Bexar County, Oakwood Estates has shifted from pastoral land to a setting for new subdivisions. "It's like living in the country in the middle of the city," says David Harder, associate broker at Re/Max Associates, who has worked with clients in the area. "It's an older neighborhood with a lot of new construction and some remodeled homes." Though just 3 miles from the South Texas Medical Center and connected to major interstates, the region retains its quiet character. Residents live near O.P. Schnabel Park and have sprawling homesteads offering privacy and seclusion while being close to major employers.

"Oakland Estates is a sought-after and attractive neighborhood." Spanish Eclectic, contemporary and ranch-style homes fill lots of up to 4 acres and set back from narrow streets. Most homes are over 1,500 square feet and can reach over 4,000 square feet. Prices range from $400,000 to nearly $1 million. Preserve at Research Enclave is a gated community of new traditional houses with an HOA. The neighborhood has a CAP Index Crime Score of 6 out of 10, higher than the national average of 4.
