Located in the heart of San Antonio and north of Fort Sam Houston, Oakwell Farms is an established, gated community surrounded by nature. It’s bordered by Salado Creek to the east, and Interstate 410 to the north. “Oakwell Farms is a gated, master-planned community offering everything from townhomes, garden homes, single family homes to large estate homes,” says Melissa Wiggans, broker/owner of Real Estate Muses. “Residents love its resort style amenities. Many find Oakwell Farms appealing due to its proximity to the San Antonio Airport, military installations including Fort Sam Houston, Joint Base San Antonio and San Antonio Military Medical Center, close healthcare options and shopping.”

Houses are brick-faced, with most sporting steep, layered Tudor-style gables. The recent median sale price is $606,000, with prices ranging from $460,000 for a single-story, cottage-style house with 2,400 square feet of living space to $799,000 for a two-story New Traditional Tudor with 3,500 square feet of living space. Since the community is gated, the streets are quiet and walkable.

Students can attend Northwood Elementary School, Garner Middle School and MacArthur High School. MacArthur High is graded A-minus on Niche, and offers Advanced Placement, Dual Credit and Dual Enrollment classes. Students can also apply to participate in magnet programs like the Space and Engineering Technologies Academy (SETA).

When it’s time for grocery shopping, you’ll find H-E-B at Sunset Square Shopping Center on Austin Highway, near a Walmart Supercenter. Past the Walmart are retail stores like Target and Ross. You can also check out specialty stores in the area, including La Michoacana Supermarket, the Korean Market and Seoul Asian Market and Cafe. At Hearthstone Bakery Cafe, order a croissant sandwich, Belgian waffles or a breakfast bowl in the morning, or gourmet sandwiches or wraps, or hot-pressed paninis for lunch. For some traditional Texas barbeque, try the brisket plate and other barbequed meats in plate or sandwich form at The Barbeque Station.

Next to Garner Middle School, Tobin Library is built on land that was originally part of Oakwell Farms, and donated to the City of San Antonio. In addition to a wide selection of reading material for booklovers of all ages, the library hosts programming events that appeal to all interests, including meetings for Dungeons & Dragons, LEGO, Tai Chi and more. On the other side of Ira Lee Road is R II M Golf Academy & Driving Range, a public, 9-hole Par 3 course designed to help you shape up your short game.

The Oakwell Farms Homeowners Association meets monthly. It’s a good source of information for current activities and issues in the community, like the Fourth of July parade. Information is also sent via email, so make sure to sign up for the HOA newsletter. Community amenities include a full recreation center with a junior Olympic-sized pool, clubhouse, tennis courts, sports field, a basketball court and a paved walking trail that winds through the beautiful, forested area of the community. “The mature shade trees and landscape on the walk and bike paths are another resident favorite,” says Wiggans. Oakwell Farms Park is surrounded by mature trees in the middle of the community. Close by on Ira Lee Road, you can access the Salado Creek Greenway by walking or riding your bike to the Laurens Lane Trail Connection, or driving to Oakwell Trailhead Park. In a 15-minute drive, you can reach Brackenridge Park, the second oldest public park in San Antonio.

At Oakwell Farms, you can live in an established, gated community immersed in nature, close to modern amenities.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
