A small San Antonio community

Located on the southwestern edge of downtown, Palm Heights is a San Antonio neighborhood reflective of the city’s growth. Lots are small and homes are tightly clustered together, all surrounding the small green space of the community center. “It’s pretty welcoming,” says Alberto Olliva, recreation supervisor at the Palm Heights Community Center and San Antonio resident of 26 years. “There’s always families here using the BBQ grills or just playing catch in the grass.” There is much to discover in this part of town, as the main road cutting through its center is a hub of family-owned businesses and restaurants with diverse offerings. Offering a solid school system and a quick bus ride downtown, Palm Heights feels intimately connected to Alamo City’s humble beginnings.

Home in Palm Heights

Homes in Palm Heights are mostly single-story models, with sprawling ranch-styles and compact bungalows lining the densely packed streets. Most houses in the neighborhood were built between 1940 and 1960 and tend towards the smaller side, usually ranging in size from 700 to 1,100 square feet. Homes are modestly priced compared to the rest of San Antonio, with a renovated two-bedroom bungalow beginning at around $168,000 and a remodeled four-bedroom ranch-style pricing at around $250,000.

The shopping district of Palm Heights

Locals can shop for groceries at Poco Loco Supermercado directly in the neighborhood or can head 1 mile north on Nogalitos Street to H-E-B. Palm Heights is a short 3-mile drive from South Park Mall, where residents will find the nearest Target, Home Depot and Lowe’s. The community also has a number of popular family-owned eateries, such as Nadine’s Mexican Restaurant and El Valle Fruiteria. Among the most recognizable businesses in Palm Heights is Rudy’s Feed Store, which has been family-owned and operated since 1967. Rudy’s keeps the community well-stocked with pet food, livestock feed and garden supplies.

Fiesta San Antonio

As part of Alamo City, Palm Heights experiences the full-blown extravaganza of the annual Fiesta San Antonio. This 10-day festival occurs every spring, filling the streets with carnival music, colorfully clad dancers and the smell of fried dough in celebration of the city’s rich history and heritage with events like the Texas Cavaliers River Parade, one of the few in the United States in which the floats actually float down the San Antonio River.

Palm Heights Community Center

Palm Heights Park is the community’s singular green space, a two-block oasis at the heart of the neighborhood. Children romp on the shaded playground swing sets while residents make use of the covered basketball courts, ensuring outdoor time even in the sweltering Texas summers. The park is also home to the Palm Heights Community Center, which hosts summer day camps and features a recreation room for weekend and afterschool activities. “Every single hour, we have community programming scheduled,” Olliva says. “There are free classes and activities for everyone, from children to adults.” While area children compete in soccer leagues, grown-ups can learn guitar or take part in daily fitness classes in the gym.

San Antonio scholastics

Children in Palm Heights begin school at Stonewall Flanders Elementary, which earns a C from Niche. Stonewall Flanders is active in the community, putting on a bike safety rodeo event and partnering with the San Antonio Spurs Hype Squad to teach students about professional dance. They then attend Armando Leal, Jr. Middle School, another C-rated institution, where the choir recently participated in the University Interscholastic League competition. Students finish at Harlandale High School, which earns a C-plus and has been an educational staple in the community since 1896.

Buses to The Alamo

Nogalitos Street is the main thoroughfare of Palm Heights, bisecting the neighborhood and running directly to downtown San Antonio. The No. 51 bus line runs along this road and can transport residents to The Alamo in 22 minutes. Commuters also have easy access to Interstate 10, which travels north 12 miles to San Antonio International Airport.
