Community investment is growing South San Antonio
In the early 1900s, Quintana made up the main street district for South San Antonio. Today, the industrial community is defined by its location next to Fort San Antonio — consisting of the Lackland Airforce Base and Kelly Field Annex — and the area’s many railroads and manufacturing yards. Its location is near multiple growing employers while maintaining an accessible price point. “Fort San Antonio and the headquarters for Boeing and the DeLorean Motor Company are driving people to move here for jobs,” says Cesar Amezcua, who has worked in the city for over 15 years and is an owner at CA & Company. “The land is still inexpensive enough, and the neighborhood has easy access to Highway 90 and the air force base.” South San Main Street Project, a group founded by South Antonio natives, brought new projects to the area since its founding in 2011, including updating sidewalks, protecting historic homes and welcoming new businesses.
UT San Antonio maintains Quintana’s architecture
The neighborhood is full of Craftsman cottages and brick, ranch-style houses, all mainly built in the 1940s and 1950s. Properties rarely look exactly alike, with unique stonework and brightly colored paint setting each home apart from its neighbor. Architecture students at the University of Texas at San Antonio teamed up with South San Main Street Project to create plans to maintain the neighborhood’s housing. Bungalow and cottage-style homes sell for $100,000 to $300,000, while ranch homes range from $200,000 to $300,000. Quintana streets feature sidewalks and sloping yards filled with trees and small gardens. South San Main Street Project worked to make the area more walkable, including updating sidewalks and adding benches and trees along roadways. San Antonio is flood-prone, but Quintana is not in one of the city’s major floodplains. The community has an overall CAP Index Crime Score of 5 out of 10, slightly higher than the national average score of 4.

Short drive to the Lackland Air Force Base
The neighborhood is 6 miles from the Lackland Air Force Base and 2 miles from the Kelly Annex, making it a convenient location for military members to settle into the city. Boeing’s manufacturing plant is also alongside the Kelly Annex. Major roads like Quintana Road, West Southcross Boulevard and Somerset Road are the best ways to navigate within the community and to the air force base. All these roads also have VIA Metropolitan bus stops. Interstates 35 and 10, and Highway 90, connect to the rest of the metro. Downtown San Antonio, where major employers like the DeLorean Motor Company are based, is a 7-mile drive. The nearest hospital is Baptist Neighborhood Hospital on Zarzamora Street, 3 miles away, and San Antonio International Airport is 15 miles away.
Local restaurants and small businesses are coming to Quintana
Quintana is filled with locally owned Mexican eateries on nearly every street. Angela’s Mexican Café on Zarzamora Street, El Valle Fruiteria and Restaurant on Nogalitos Street and La Esmeralda Bakery on New Laredo Highway are just a few spots where locals can grab tacos, tortilla soup and nachos. Two Family Dollar stores — one on Southcross Boulevard and the other on Nogalitos Street — are the main shopping options. Many other supermarkets are within a 5-mile drive, including Sam’s Club and Target on Southwest Military Drive and H-E-B Plus on South Zarzamora Street. All these shops surround South Park Mall on Southwest Military Drive, which has anchor stores like Macy’s, JCPenney and Sports Zone. More businesses may be added to the neighborhood in the future. Quintana is a target area in San Antonio’s Inner City Reinvestment Policy, which offers incentives for businesses to move into designated areas. “A lot of our friends grew up in the area but then moved out when they got jobs or went to college,” says Gilbert Morales, a South San Main Street Project founder. “We wanted to see the area brought back to the life it once had so people want to stay.”
