Small rural city 21 miles from downtown

Driving past open stretches of green land along Interstate 37 is the small city of Sandy Oaks, incorporated in Bexar County in 2014. Despite its name, it's distinct from the neighborhood of the same name, located just 3 miles away. Late-night hangouts at the local saloon, leisurely walks to the city park or visiting the local meat market for fresh beef are just a few snapshots of life in Sandy Oaks. There isn't much happening in this sleepy town, and a drive is necessary for shopping, but that is why locals love it. "It's a quiet, country town disconnected from the city bustle but still close enough to commute to major shopping and workplaces," says Mayor Michael Martinez. Residents enjoy easy access to San Antonio, just 21 miles away, for a vibrant cultural scene, river activities and annual events.

Playground nearby at Sandy Oaks City Park

Surrounded by woodlands, Sandy Oaks is enveloped by nature but only has one community park. Sandy Oaks City Park is on the community's northeastern corridor on Hickory Haven Drive. At the playground near the community center, kids can hop across the Lilypad Walk and swing off the monkey bars. There is also a basketball court and a small half-mile walking trail. A natural spring is to the left of Mathis Road, and the city plans to develop the area as a park. Sandy Oaks is 6 miles from Braunig Lake Park, where visitors enjoy camping, boating and trails for a small fee. The ticket for getting into the park also includes admission to another nearby reservoir, Calaveras Lake Park, which is 11 miles from there.

Rural living in Sandy Oaks

Sandy Oak's houses are surrounded by towering hickories and Blackjack Oaks. "Sandy Oaks has lower property taxes than the surrounding area," says Martinez. Many properties are manufactured mobile homes, sprawling ranch-style houses and Modern Craftsman residences, which vary from corner to corner in size and color. Street names like Restless Deer and Hickory Shadow lend to the city's rural locale, filled with heavily wooded curving roads. Locals move here for more space, and the average property size in the city is half an acre. The town lacks sidewalks, houses offering gravel or paved driveways, and some have large, fenced-in yards. Properties were built throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s and are seeing plenty of new construction in 2023 and 2024. Surrounding ranch properties with expansive acreage can reach over $2 million. Sale prices range from $170,000 for 1,900 square feet to $600,000 for custom-builds over 3,700 square feet.

Fresh steak at La Moreliana Meat Market

For a taste of nightlife, locals head to Coyote Crossing Saloon on Mathis Road, open until 2 a.m., offering a laid-back atmosphere for drinks, darts and pool games. La Moreliana Meat Market provides fresh meats and authentic Mexican cuisine, doubling as a restaurant and bakery. While the city lacks a central retail hub, Dollar General on New Mathis Road is for quick errands, while a 14-mile drive north to Brooks offers larger retailers like H-E-B, Target, Sam's Club, and Walmart. Within town limits, J&S Smokehouse serves up tender smoked brisket and turkey legs, while El Guero Loco Mexican Restaurant is known for its breakfast tacos and menudo.

Education provided by Southside Independent School District

Sandy Oaks is served by the Southside Independent School District, educating around 5,965 students and rated with an overall grade of C-minus, according to Niche. Freedom Elementary School is 4 miles north, and Matthey Middle School is 6 miles away, rated with a C-minus. The middle school offers electives in Business Information Management, Robotics and Agriculture. Southside High School is 9 miles away and earns a C grade, offering the Early College program, Air Force JROTC and Career & Technical Education Programs.

Easy access to Interstate 37

Sandy Oaks is a rural community with no public transportation, but it is still connected to highways. "People are drawn to Sandy Oaks because of its relative position to San Antonio," says Mayor Martinez. Interstate 37 runs along the city's western edge. This thoroughfare that leads to downtown San Antonio is 21 miles, making the commute about 30 minutes. The 1604 Loop is just 4 miles north, and U.S. 281 is found further east. The city is 32 miles from San Antonio International Airport, and 24/7 medical care is provided at Mission Trail Baptist Hospital, which is 15 miles north.
