Growing west side neighborhood near Port San Antonio

Thompson is a westside community of subdivisions where generations live side by side. "There's so much going on there. There are many families, and the community is beautiful," says Robert Rocha, a salesperson with Berkshire Hathaway Home Service Don Johnson Realtors, who grew up in the neighborhood. "There are really nice people there. They always try to help you out." Locals are part of a school district that offers college prep programs, and kids are within walking distance of parks and an outdoor swimming pool. Thompson is 7 miles from downtown and near major highways. Just 2 miles south is Port San Antonio, a technology and innovation campus employing over 18,000 people in the city.

Paved trails and a public swimming pool at Kennedy Park

Kennedy Park is on the neighborhood's southeast side, offering a sprawling recreational hub within walking distance of homes. In the afternoons, the park is full of residents practicing softball under the shaded playground or neighborhood kids swimming in the outdoor public pool that’s open during the summer. Kelly Park is west of Thompson, across from General Hudnell Drive, with a small playground and walking trail. The park is also home to Edgewood Veterans Stadium, which brings in crowds for Friday night football games.

Thompson's postwar subdivisions

Thompson has more than 10 subdivisions with townhouses and apartments. The neighborhood is almost industrial, near several highways and a railroad track. Most homes are minimal traditional and ranch-style, built in the 1940s to the 1960s and featuring brick, stone and vinyl siding. Residences typically have paved driveways with carports, while others include attached garages. Robles Street surrounds a large cul-de-sac and has about 20 contemporary farmhouse bungalows, built in 2022, in neutral-colored hues. Prices across subdivisions range from $110,000 to over $275,000. "You'll find pockets being flipped by investors. These neighborhoods might not have the best reputation, but some people like the charm in the older homes," says Juanita Ortega, a Realtor with Premier Realty Group. She's been selling houses for eight years.

Just 5 miles from Target and Sam's Club

Thompson has limited retail options but is home to some long-standing restaurants. "Fred's Fish Fry has always been there and is still there today. There's also Tellez Tamales and Barbacoa, which is a very community-oriented place. Everybody goes there for breakfast tamales or barbacoa," Rocha says. Nearby, the 24-hour Rocky's Taco House on Cupples Road stands out in its bright yellow Spanish Revival-style building. Inside, large portraits of Texas icon Selena and vibrant murals of Mexico decorate the walls. The neighborhood also has a Dollar General and Dollar Tree, and H-E-B is 3 miles east on Nogalitos Street. Target and Sam's Club are 5 miles south for big-box shopping.

Port San Antonio is a tech hub

Thompson has a strong military presence due to its proximity to the former Kelly Air Force Base. The neighborhood honors this connection with Veterans Stadium at John F. Kennedy High School. The base's closure in the 1990s impacted the community as many residents lost jobs. Today, the area is reviving. The technology campus of Port San Antonio is home to offices for Northrop Grumman and Booz Allen Hamilton. The Boeing Center at Tech Port also hosts various events.

Fiesta San Antonio is every April

While the neighborhood doesn’t organize any of its own events, it's hard to miss the vibrant celebrations nearby. Fiesta San Antonio takes place every April, bringing the city to life with millions taking part in the 11-day festivities. Families come together to honor the city's rich history rooted in the Alamo, including traditions like the colorful Texas Cavaliers River Parade.

Downtown San Antonio is 7 miles away

With U.S. Highway 90 along the neighborhood's north side, locals can easily hop on I-35 for a 7-mile trip downtown. The city's VIA Transit bus stops are throughout the area. San Antonio International Airport is 15 miles north, and Baptist Neighborhood Hospital is just 7 miles south. The neighborhood's CAP Index Crime Score is 5 out of 10, slightly higher than the national average of 4.
