"There are really nice people there. They always try to help you out." Locals are part of a school district that offers college prep programs, and kids are within walking distance of parks and an outdoor swimming pool. Thompson's postwar subdivisions
Thompson has more than 10 subdivisions with townhouses and apartments. The neighborhood is almost industrial, near several highways and a railroad track. Most homes are minimal traditional and ranch-style, built in the 1940s to the 1960s and featuring brick, stone and vinyl siding. Residences typically have paved driveways with carports, while others include attached garages. Robles Street surrounds a large cul-de-sac and has about 20 contemporary farmhouse bungalows, built in 2022, in neutral-colored hues. Prices across subdivisions range from $110,000 to over $275,000. "You'll find pockets being flipped by investors. These neighborhoods might not have the best reputation, but some people like the charm in the older homes," says Juanita Ortega, a Realtor with Premier Realty Group. She's been selling houses for eight years.
Just 5 miles from Target and Sam's Club
Thompson has limited retail options but is home to some long-standing restaurants. "Fred's Fish Fry has always been there and is still there today. There's also Tellez Tamales and Barbacoa, which is a very community-oriented place. Everybody goes there for breakfast tamales or barbacoa," Rocha says. Nearby, the 24-hour Rocky's Taco House on Cupples Road stands out in its bright yellow Spanish Revival-style building. Inside, large portraits of Texas icon Selena and vibrant murals of Mexico decorate the walls. The neighborhood also has a Dollar General and Dollar Tree, and H-E-B is 3 miles east on Nogalitos Street. Target and Sam's Club are 5 miles south for big-box shopping.
