A planned community with easy highway access

The Verde Hills neighborhood of Northwest San Antonio includes several well-recognized subdivisions like Sierra Vista and Oak Bluff. The area is unique in that, depending on which section residents choose, they’ll be in densely populated, newly constructed tract housing or on spacious acre lots in established homes. Part of Texas’ Hill Country, this is a community balanced between a suburban and semi-rural feel. The University of Texas Health Verde Hills medical complex is conveniently located at the neighborhood’s edge along the well-traveled Bandera Road.

Spacious lots and newer housing

The neighborhood progresses from a small commercial area near Bandera and Prue Roads to established ranch-style homes on large lots to newly built subdivisions filled with bungalows, condos, townhouses and tract homes. Many of the houses have brick and stone exteriors, and most have built-in garages in the subdivisions. Mature live oaks are clustered around houses throughout the area. Potential homeowners should know moving into Verde Hills can take planning because only a few homes are on the market at any one time. Prices range from $225,000 for a three-bedroom ranch-style house to $440,000 for a four-bedroom contemporary new construction.

Miles of trails through natural beauty

Verde Hills rests just above O.P. Schnabel Park. The 202-acre green space was obtained by the city in 1964 and was initially called Bandera Road Park. It was renamed in 1977 for one of San Antonio’s most prominent supporters of natural beauty and a litter-free town. Today, it’s a trailhead for the Leon Creek Greenway and contains 8 miles of its own walking and mountain biking paths. Oak trees and mountain laurels provide shady canopies of green, and locals regularly see deer and other wildlife. There’s also a playground, activity center and various ball fields and courts. The Leon Creek Greenway is part of the Mayor Howard Peake Greenway System and contains 22 miles of paved trails connecting Loop 410 to Loop 1604. One of the busiest trails in the city, it offers beautiful views of its namesake creek, small ponds and a variety of wildlife.

Brevity Coffee Company is a great choice for a quality cup of java in a short amount of time. The shop also serves fresh baked goods, smoothies and energy drinks. Located between downtown and the hills

Traveling to and from Verde Hills can take many forms. It’s inside North Loop 1604 and near Interstates 10 and 410. Local roads Bandera and Prue make getting downtown or to the rest of Hill Country that much easier. There are sidewalks in the newer subdivisions, and some cyclists enjoy the challenge of the rising elevation here. The community is 16 miles from downtown, 8 miles from Six Flags Fiesta Texas and 19 miles from the San Antonio International Airport.
