Freeways 210 and 215 give residents of Roosevelt access to the best of the Inland Empire.
Across the freeway from downtown
Roosevelt is a small residential community in the city of San Bernadino, which is known for its history as a citrus and manufacturing powerhouse. Interstate 215 and state Route 259 meet on one side of Roosevelt, and state Route 210 is nearby. Downtown San Bernadino is to the east, directly across the freeway via the West 16th Street overpass.
"Once you go on the west side of the 215, you are pretty close to the area where you want to be," says Carlos Flores, a Realtor with Keller Williams Whittier, who has been in real estate for over a decade. "It's cheaper on this side. Families are coming out here."
Flores says it's like a ghost town in some parts of San Bernadino, but not Roosevelt. The neighborhood, a little pocket of a large city, is primarily residential, with mostly gridded, walkable streets. Sidewalks are partially shaded by trees such as sycamores, magnolias and palms.
1920s to midcentury homes, Cypress Inn
Single-family homes come in a variety of types and styles, from modestly sized 1920s bungalows to midcentury ranch-style and Spanish-influenced homes with stucco exteriors and terracotta roof tiles. Iron, chain-link or decorative brick and stone fencing enclose many properties, which typically have small front yards. Most properties have a driveway to the side, often a garage or carport in the back.
Homes sell for $235,000 to $480,000, with larger examples and remodels on the higher end of the range. "There are a lot of remodels, some by investors," Flores says.
Cypress Inn Mobile Home Park, a community of manufactured homes off Mount Vernon Avenue in the neighborhood's north end, has prices from $75,500 to $167,000.
Parks: Guitierrez, Encanto and Bobby Vega
Gutierrez Park, also called Gutierrez Field, has a baseball diamond often used for Little League games. To the south, Encanto Park has softball diamonds and handball courts. Adjacent Bobby Vega Park has tennis courts and barbecue grills. The three parks have playgrounds and picnic tables.
Roosevelt Elementary, San Bernadino High
Public schools in Roosevelt are part of the San Bernardino City Unified School District, including Roosevelt Elementary School, which earns a B-minus grade from Niche. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School has a C, and San Bernadino High School has a B-plus. The high school offers dual immersion in Spanish, and qualifying students earn a seal of biliteracy achievement award.
Corner stores, downtown entertainment, Rialto
Small shops and corner stores in the neighborhood include La Noria Market, Neighbors Market and Santa Fe Market. There's an auto parts store, a feed and grain store and a self-storage facility. To the south, there's a Family Dollar and eateries like Amapola Rico Taco and Carnitas Michoacan. El Super grocery store is about a mile away from Roosevelt.
A few miles to the east in downtown San Bernadino, points of interest include the Original McDonald's Site and Museum, where the fast-food chain got its start in 1948. Regal San Bernadino has first-run films, and the California Theater of the Performing Arts, in a historical auditorium building, is popular for musicals, plays and movies accompanied by the Mighty Wurlitzer Organ or the San Bernadino Symphony Orchestra.
Flores says some people go to the Rialto area. Rialto's downtown is about 5 miles west of Roosevelt. Assorted businesses are on South Riverside Avenue, and there are several shopping centers on Foothill Boulevard, a portion of historic Route 66. Acacia Plaza includes Stater Bros. Markets.
Omnitrans buses, San Bernardino Transit Center
In addition to the West 16th Street overpass, North Massachusetts Avenue and West Base Line Street are other routes across I-215.
Roosevelt has Omnitrans buses, with stops on streets like North Mount Vernon Avenue and West Base Line Street. The San Bernardino Transit Center is a few miles away, providing service on the Metrolink San Bernadino Line. The trip to Downtown Los Angeles is about 60 miles, usually under an hour and a half.
San Bernadino International Airport, about 6 miles away, has general aviation and commercial services plus flights via Breeze Airways. For more passenger flights, Ontario International Airport is about 23 miles to the west. Both airports have telephone hotlines and online forms for registering noise complaints.
