Established neighborhood between the city and the mountains
Some might say that ‘X marks the spot,’ but in Wildwood Park, it’s an arrowhead. Tucked into the San Bernardino Mountain foothills, the nearly 1,400-foot-long historic landmark is visible for miles and points to the Wildwood Park community. This northern San Bernardino neighborhood is close to the 210 and 215 Freeways, as well as nature reserves for outdoor enthusiasts. “A lot of people look on the north side of San Bernardino because it’s a quieter area than the other side of the freeway,” says Lilia Garcia, a Realtor with Dynasty Real Estate and almost 20 years of experience.

A variety of housing near the San Bernardino National Forest
Wildwood Park has a variety of apartment complexes, condos and detached single-family housing styles from the 1950s to the 1980s. Midcentury modern, ranch-style and Spanish-inspired homes line residential streets. Many have elements like stucco walls, terracotta roof tiles, attached garages and wood or vinyl exteriors. “We have a shortage of homes, and the pricing is high. It hasn’t come down much due to the low inventory. Even the rental market is high, but it’s still more affordable than LA, Orange County or San Diego,” says James Boyd, Broker with James Boyd Realty with over 30 years of experience. Homes sell for a median price of $480,000 after 44 days on the market, although the entire price range starts around $225,000 and continues into the low $700,000s.

While there isn’t much retail in the neighborhood, Wildwood Park is close to all the essentials. Cardenas and Stater Bros. Markets provide produce and pantry items, along with specialty Latin ingredients. Rosa Maria’s opened in 1975 and has become a San Bernardino favorite. The drive-thru serves authentic Mexican fare and is home to the Garbage Burrito, which is made with an in-house handmade tortilla. Family-owned and operated for 16 years, Bobo’s Pizza makes a variety of specialty and custom pies. George’s Burgers is known for its fresh ingredients and large portions whether customers want breakfast, lunch or dinner. There are also various quick-service restaurants along 40th Street. Sterling Plaza, Seley Plaza and Del Rosa Shopping Center are less than six miles away and offer a variety of retailers, pharmacies and services.

Reserves, resorts and green spaces
Wildwood Park’s namesake underwent beautification and repairs in July 2023. It has four baseball diamonds, a playground and exercise areas alongside picnic tables and grills. There’s also a dog park where four-legged friends can run off-leash. The area is patrolled by security to enforce the opening and closing times. Tom Gould Memorial Park covers half an acre but packs in three playgrounds and picnic areas. Route 18 takes explorers into the San Bernardino National Forest. The massive 675,000-acre reserve offers 42 campsites, hundreds of miles of hiking and biking trails and seven distinct wilderness areas. Skiers flock to winter resorts on two of the tallest mountains in Southern California, while off-highway vehicle trails run past creeks and waterfalls.

Urban streets and mountain roads
Electric Avenue, 40th Street and Route 18 border the area, with the foothills making up the neighborhood's top portion. Route 18 takes residents to the 210 Freeway, connecting San Bernardino with Redlands and Rancho Cucamonga. Sierra Way bisects Wildwood Park, which lies four miles from the Dignity Health-St. Bernardine Medical Center or 24 miles from Ontario International Airport. The neighborhood has limited public transportation, with the No. 6 bus route passing through the area’s southern portion. Pedestrians have to be aware of cars because sidewalks are sporadic here.

Environmental factors and crime
Wildwood Park has a CAP Index score of 8 out of 10, twice the national average. People here have the highest risk of burglary and property crimes. The San Bernardino Police Department is working within the community to improve public engagement, build relationships and increase the neighborhood’s trust in law enforcement. There’s also a high risk of wildfires, but San Bernardino Country Fire Station 227 is located at the neighborhood’s western edge to reduce response time and keep flames from threatening people and property.
