With an eclectic offering of homes and great proximity to Downtown San Diego, you can find your own personal sanctuary in Castle.
Many of the single-family homes in Castle were developed in the 1920s into the 1940s and have since been remodeled or upgraded to feel like new and are usually priced anywhere between the mid $500,000 range up to $800,000. Homes in Castle have a blend of architectural styles, ranging from classic ranch-style homes with gabled roofs, pueblo homes with adobe walls and houses with Spanish-style tiled roofs and stucco finishes. There are also many unique homes in the area, including A-frames that give off a quaint charm and homes with paint finishes that stand out from the rest. You’ll also find several castle-like homes throughout the neighborhood, with turrets and arched entryways. Townhomes and condominium units are also available throughout the community, many of which have modern kitchen appliances and are centrally located near many of the area’s amenities.
If you want to get outside for some fresh air, there are plenty of outdoor spaces around. Head to Manzanita Canyon to get your steps in for the day on one of the walking trails. You can learn new tricks at the skate park at Central Avenue Mini Park, which also features a basketball court perfect for a quick pickup game and a playground for children. Castle residents are only minutes away from the City Heights Recreation Center in neighboring Fairmount Village. With a community pool perfect for cooling off during the summer, tennis courts and green spaces perfect for a picnic, there’s plenty to do.
Children in the neighborhood will likely start their education at Joyner or Cherokee Point Elementary School, both part of the San Diego Unified School District. Cherokee Point offers a preschool program so children can have an early start to their education. After that, they will likely attend Hoover High School, home of the Cardinals. With an offering of STEAM, AP and honors courses, students can receive a well-rounded education in addition to a year-round offering of sports programs.
Head to University Ave for various locally owned shops, markets and dining options. For any ingredients for tonight’s dinner, head to Hoa Hing or Trang’s Seafood Market. If you’re not in the mood for cooking, you can get birria tacos or a piping hot bowl of menudo from TJ Birrierria. There are also plenty of fast-food options around for a quick bite. For a taste of the area’s nightlife, head to Black Cat Bar, a local favorite for its dive bar aesthetic and live music.
If you want to head downtown for dinner, the Castle neighborhood is conveniently located next to the 805 freeway, allowing quick access to the rest of the city. There are several public bus stops parsed throughout the main thoroughfare of University Ave, in addition to the many stops in the residential areas.
