Naval history and planned walkability near downtown San Diego
For almost 100 years, if a brave West Coast soul enlisted in the Navy, they went to boot camp at Liberty Station Naval Training Center. This was until the 1990s, when the training center closed and the planned community, Liberty Station, was built in its place. The barracks became home to restaurants and markets, and the center's south side was transformed into streets of Mediterranean-style rowhomes. Realtor Carolyn Yarbrough, owner of the Yarbrough Group and an original homeowner in Liberty Station, says, "It's laid out as a walking village. You can walk to the dentist, walk to Trader Joe's, walk to school, walk to tennis. You can't find anything else in San Diego with this level of walkability that isn't a totally urban neighborhood." The community sits right on San Diego Bay, looking out across the water. Having this upscale residential setting in the downtown area is the neighborhood's main advantage. "When people are thinking of nice places to live in San Diego, they know La Jolla, but it's a little out of the way," says Yarbrough. "Liberty Station is on that list of nicer locations, but it's downtown, so you have everything around you."

Walk to Liberty Public Market
The barracks and buildings that used to host sailors and training facilities are now home to restaurants, stores, art studios and local businesses. "There's really no other military base that's been so successfully repurposed into such a vibrant area," says Rachel Frank, social media manager for Liberty Station. The station has multiple promenades, each offering something different. Most of the action is in Liberty Public Market, located in the north promenade. The halls of this indoor market are lined with food stalls, local boutiques and bottle shops. "A lot of San Diego restaurants get their start in Liberty Public Market, so it has all kinds of different cuisines," says Frank. The south promenade, closest to homes, has a Trader Joe's for groceries, yoga studios and casual cafes. Legacy Plaza sits at the center of it all, with a collection of art studios and galleries surrounding a tranquil courtyard. Through all this transformation, Liberty Station maintains the history of each building. "Each building has a plaque where people can read about the naval history," says Frank. "For example, the Lot Theater is in the old theater where performers, like Bob Hope, would come and do shows for the sailors," says Frank.

Multiple Mediterranean-style options
The community's residential streets lie between Farragut Road and Laning Road. Sidewalks decorated with laurels and palms connect residents to the neighboring collection of restaurants and shops. "There are three types of homes," says Yarbrough. "Townhouses, detached rowhomes in Beacon Point and more square homes with larger lots in Admiralty Row." These names aren't separate areas; they refer to the community's different housing options. No matter the size or shape, traditional Mediterranean-style details, like red-tile roofs and stucco exteriors, can be expected. Townhouses are on the streets closest to the bay. They can range from $1 million to $1.5 million. The blocks of detached rowhouses — known as Beacon Point — run through the center of the residential area with grassy courtyards in between. They can cost $1.5 million to $2 million. Admiralty Row is farthest from the bay. Its homes are similar in size to the rowhomes, but their wider footprint allows for more yard space. Admiralty Row's prices also start around $1.5 million but often exceed $2 million.
Liberty Station’s quiet neighborhood streets provide the perfect place to stroll.

Bayfront space at Naval Training Center Park
Residents can follow the sidewalks to Naval Training Center Park on the neighborhood's waterfront. It offers a few acres of lawn space with paved walking paths winding through. Kids can run free on the playground, and picnickers can set up at tables in the park's decorative gardens. Nautical enthusiasts can enjoy the scenery of San Diego Harbor to the south. "People can drive their golf cart down to the boat docks and watch the races go by," says Yarbrough. Americas Cup Harbor, south of the neighborhood, is named after the world's premier sailing race, and races of all levels regularly occur in the bay.

Military appreciation and holiday events
Every August, Liberty Station hosts the Military Heroes Festival to honor San Diego's proud military population. The event is held in Ingram Plaza and is free for active-duty military, veterans and their families. There's live music, games, and giveaways for clothing, groceries and haircuts. The Holiday Tree Lighting is another staple, occurring every year on the day after Thanksgiving. Thousands gather in the north promenade to watch the tree lighting and enjoy live entertainment.
Live next to San Diego International Airport
Flights are easy to catch, with San Diego International Airport on the neighborhood's east side. The main terminal is just over a mile away on North Harbor Drive. Residents can expect some airplane noise, but it's not a determining factor when buying a home in this area. Commuters can take North Harbor Drive about 5 miles across the bay to work in downtown San Diego or at San Diego Naval Base. Many residents commute to biotech hubs in North County San Diego, like Sorento Valley, just over 15 miles north on Interstate 5. A car really isn't necessary for getting anywhere within the community, but there are buses on Rosecrans Street for those who want to get around the surrounding area without driving.
