One of San Diego's most established areas
Logan Heights, one of San Diego's oldest communities, has a distinct identity that embodies a rich and diverse cultural history. The neighborhood began to shape after the Mexican Revolution. From 1910 to 1920, a large number of Mexican refugees moved to the area. Logan Heights and Barrio Logan became two of California's largest Mexican American communities by 1940. Today, the freeway separates Barrio Logan from Logan Heights; However, the two neighborhoods still have a strong shared history and connection. "Logan Heights is very residential, but there are many activities to do. The area has been built up because of its proximity to downtown San Diego," says Lana Cooper-Jones, a San Diego native who grew up in and around the community. Much of the neighborhood streets are drawn in a diagonal pattern to offer better views of San Diego Bay. Many homes are within walking distance of schools, churches and restaurants.

Locals visits markets and favorite dining spots
Some local favorites include El Salvadoreno, serving classic dishes such as carne asada baleadas. La Fachada on 25th Street is a go-to eatery for tacos and burritos with house-made corn tortillas. Hungry diners can also find prawns, oysters and other seafood prepared in classic Mexican dishes at Golosito. While Logan Heights is home to many comforting meals and convenient markets, neighbors also shop in Barrio Logan. Shoppers can head to Northgate Market, a popular grocery store specializing in all-natural chorizo, fresh pan de elote and other Mexican grocery items. "The area has a strong commercial presence and an entrepreneurial spirit with many locally-run businesses," says Lana Cooper-Jones, a San Diego native who grew up in and around the community.

Celebrating history and businesses
In early August, the Taste of Imperial Avenue event features sounds from local artists and a medley of aromas from restaurants, inviting locals to savor the eclectic flavors of Logan Heights. The event is hosted by the Logan Heights Community Development Corporation and the Greater Logan Heights Small Business Advisory Group to celebrate neighborhood business and cultural diversity.
Chicano Park, a National Historic Landmark, rests just outside of the neighborhood in Barrio Logan. After the freeway separated the two neighborhoods, the community park was scheduled to be replaced with a California Highway Patrol station in 1970. Residents rallied, successfully saved the park and celebrated their success with over 100 murals dedicated primarily to Chicano and Indigenous history. Chicano Park Day in April commemorates the inspiring story of the park's creation and serves as an opportunity to enjoy an outdoor gallery of murals celebrating Mexican-American heritage.
