Close knit community with a prime location
Oak Park is a close-knit community with a great location near Downtown San Diego. “This is a really nice neighborhood. The folks who come into the library are very community-minded individuals,” says Mark Davis, who has been with the Oak Park Branch Library since it first started as a bookmobile over ten years ago. The neighborhood brings in buyers looking for proximity to San Diego, but it’s much more than just a bedroom community thanks to regularly scheduled local events that bring residents together.

Potluck picnics and library programs
The Oak Park Community Council not only hosts neighborhood cleanup events but also champions neighborhood causes, meeting its goal in 2022 to revamp the Oak Branch Library. This council has been very active since 1974 and continues to update residents on community development plans. “We’ve also got the Fourth of July parade where people bring their old cars and dress up as the Statue of Liberty and go to the potluck picnic,” Davis says. “The library has programs every month too, especially during the summertime to keep the kids active when school is out. We’re actually doing a live animal show right now.”

No uniform housing here
Oak Park was designated as one of the first plots for tract housing before the 1940s. Despite this historic goal of uniform housing, today the neighborhood offers residents a blend of attached and detached single-family homes. Much of the area consists of cottages and ranch-style homes, but there are also Spanish Colonial Revival houses as well. “There are lots of single-family homes here. We don’t have the big apartment sprawl and associated parking issues that the nearby communities have,” Davis says. “We’re kind of an island in the storm of all these apartments nearby.” Homes sell for between $450,000 and $860,000.

Fishing lessons for kids
Chollas Lake Park is a popular gathering spot, featuring weekly adult walking classes, fishing lessons for children and the Chollas Lake Wildlife Walk program, where children can enjoy guided tours of the park in search of wildlife. The park also hosts Summer Movies in the Park, which is the largest free outdoor movie series in the county. It plays family-friendly movies in local parks, as well as dancing, costume contests and food trucks. “Lots of people like to go down to the park and do laps around the lake and I know there is at least one group that does Tai Chi every morning. It’s a nice little park,” Davis says. “Oh and they only let kids fish in the lake. They actually stock it just for them.”

A bit of a drive for food
While many streets have sidewalks, Oak Park doesn’t have a central downtown where residents can walk and window shop. There are, however, a few popular restaurants within the neighborhood. Tuk Tuk One Thai may have an unassuming storefront but is a local favorite for drunken noodles and salmon fried rice. El Papas Fritas Taco Shop is another untapped treasure in Oak Park. It’s best known for simple decor and authentic Mexican cuisine, from carne asada fries to fresh burritos. “It’s a bit of a food desert as far as restaurants go,” Davis says. “There are a couple options but other than that you have to drive for a bit to reach anything.” Residents are able to shop at College Grove Center, which was the county’s first regional shopping center. Also known as Marketplace at The Grove, the shopping center features several national chains such as Walmart, Target and Kohl’s.

Helix Charter High School received an A-plus rating from Niche and is known for being the first public comprehensive high school in the state to convert to a charter school.

Easy highway access
State Route 94 runs along the neighborhood and is a main commuter route to downtown San Diego, just 6 miles west. It also connects with Interstate 805 just west of Oak Park for access to the rest of San Diego County. “It’s only a 10-to-15 minute drive into downtown, so we’re not far from all the stuff going on there. And a lot of people do work in that area,” Davis says.
