A community activated by activism

Once an industrial area heavily involved in shipping thanks to its location on the San Francisco Bay, Hunters Point has gone through quite a bit of changes over the years. “Hunters Point is largely African American, and the area has had to deal with a lot of change and gentrification over the years. It’s been tough,” says Andrea Gordon, an East Bay Area Realtor with Compass. “There’s been a lot of racial tension as a result, but there has also been a lot of activism that’s championed the betterment of the community, like establishing affordable housing and decontaminating the land of radioactivity from its days as a naval shipyard.” That activism has led the way to a flourishing community with a blossoming arts scene and a few notable natives getting in on the action.

An Oscar winner revamps the old Opera House

Originally established in 1888 and reopened in 1989, the Bayview Opera House has been committed to highlighting Black arts and culture. Now, the Bayview Opera House Ruth Williams Memorial Theatre—renamed in memory of the producer, playwright and actress—serves as the hub of the city’s African American Arts and Cultural District, offering year-round programming and special events. “Oscar Award winner Danny Glover was instrumental in raising funds to convert the Opera House into the cultural center it is today,” says Gordon. “They have movie screenings, live performances and so much more for the community.” Characterized by its budding arts scene, Hunters Point is now home to artists and creative collectives. The area’s largest artist colony, The Point, offers reasonably priced art studios for rent. The Hunters Point Shipyard Artists and Islais Creek Studios put on art exhibits and other events yearly. Eye-catching murals commissioned by the city can be found along the 3rd Street corridor. The Midway—located just across the Islais Creek Channel—is a performance arts venue and creativity and innovation hub celebrating art, tech and culinary advancements.

A youth-run restaurant

Hunters Point is home to some interesting eateries with much more going on than just making meals. Old Skool Café is a jazz-themed supper club that’s entirely run by at-risk, formerly incarcerated and foster care youth ages 16-22. Not only does the venue serve comfort food from around the globe, but it also inspires the residents who dine there. Speakeasy Ales & Lagers is a popular taproom that serves IPAs, ales and lagers, all brewed in San Francisco. Hunters Point residents can now stop by the neighborhood’s first grocery store, Lucky Bayview, which opened its doors in October 2022 for groceries and other essentials.

1960s houses to 2010s condos

Modern apartment and condo buildings began popping up in Hunters Point in the 2010s and are now taking over the housing stock. A handful of neighborhood blocks are lined with townhouse complexes dating back to the late 1970s, and single-family detached homes display subtle Spanish Revival style influences, like balconies and Terracotta roof tiles dating back to the 1960s. price tags in Hunters Point can range from the $400,000s to the $800,000s, with some more spacious townhouses nearing $1 million.

Park upgrades and redesigns

With Hunters Point often paired with neighboring Bayview, residents can easily take advantage of the parks in both communities. Located right on the bay, India Basin Shoreline Park offers a playground, basketball courts and a ton of public art and murals—one of which is painted on the pavement of the basketball court. The park is also undergoing a $3.3 million upgrade that began in 2021 and is slated for completion in 2026, according to David Froehlich of the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department. Hilltop Park is filled with pride and good times. Forgotten and neglected once upon a time, Hilltop Park reopened in 2016 and now features art structures, an all-abilities play area and an onsite skate park. Hunters Point is also home to several community gardens, and the tidal wetlands around Pier 94 have been conserved for native wildlife.

From isolation to inclusion

Once San Francisco’s most isolated neighborhood, Hunters Point is now connected to the rest of the city. Interstate 280 is just a few blocks away, intersecting the 101 Freeway on the edge of nearby Silver Terrace. For those who prefer not to drive, several San Francisco Municipal (Muni) Metro light rail stations can be found along 3rd Street and Hudson Avenue, with bus stops located throughout the neighborhood.

Success from Wall-to-Wall

Part of the San Francisco Unified School District, students in Hunters Point can attend Malcolm X Academy (with a Niche score of B) and Willie L. Brown, Jr. Middle School (with a score of C) in preparation for Philip and Sala Burton Academic High School. The school was established in 1984 due to a consent decree between the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the City of San Francisco. Following the National Academy Foundation’s Wall-to-Wall Academy Model, students select one of three career-focused academies — engineering, health science and media arts and entertainment — after their first year. The school also serves as the home for public radio station KALW. Niche gives Burton a score of A-minus.

Better days are coming

Hunters Point’s overall CAP Crime Index score is a 7, with subcategories like assault, robbery and homicide tipping at 9. According to Gordon, the previous prevalence of gang activity and racial tension in the community can explain this, but the neighborhood has been turning around for the better.
