Central San Francisco community with history and outdoor amenities
Laguna Honda is a small neighborhood 4 miles south of central San Francisco, drawing its name from the neighboring hospital, a community cornerstone since the Gold Rush period. The eclectic enclave is also known as Forest Hill Extension based on its proximity to one of San Francisco's historic "residence parks," built at the beginning of the 20th Century to integrate green spaces within city limits. Stairways mark the neighborhood's rugged topography, helping homeowners across town. Laguna Honda's steep residential streets slide right into the city's dynamic West Portal shopping district, full of crowds making the rounds on foot. "It's a very desirable, close-in area," says Kira Mead, Realtor at Real SF Properties and frequent local seller.

Tile-topped Spanish styles on Laguna Honda Boulevard
Laguna Honda features tall single-family homes with colorful stucco walls, red mission-style tile roofs, and a few Colonial Revival styles. The community's architectural leaning varies from block to block – some areas are full of staggered midcentury homes, and others spotlight multi-million-dollar early 20th Century builds with ocean views. Prices start at $1 million and climb to almost $4 million, increasing with size, location and level of updates. The market can be competitive in this coveted location, and most listings find new owners within two weeks for well over the asking price.
