Up-and-coming San Francisco neighborhood with Golden Hollywood ties
Little Hollywood is one of the smallest neighborhoods in San Francisco, featuring rows of architecturally distinct homes that are rich in character and timeless in appeal. The neighborhood got its name from the first homes developed in the late ‘20s and early ‘30s by architect Charles Strothoff, who took inspiration from the housing styles of Southern California, particularly the Hollywood Hills, during that time. There’s also a local legend that silver screen star from Hollywood’s Golden Age, Mae West, secretly resided in one of the signature Spanish Colonial homes in Little Hollywood, adding to the neighborhood’s namesake. Less than a square mile in area, the neighborhood is tucked between Bayshore Boulevard and the Bayshore Freeway and has only around 1,000 residents, creating a small-town nature where people get to know their neighbors here. It offers one of the lowest starting home prices in the city with some of the most decorative architectural features. “It’s a great little spot with non-generic, whimsical-style architecture and more fun, unique home features,” says Eddie O’Sullivan, a longtime San Francisco resident and local realtor. “It’s small, so there’s not a whole lot regarding restaurants and groceries, but people are going there for the quiet streets, sunny weather, good access to the freeway and for the cool, detached homes, which is not a common opportunity in San Francisco.”

Decorative homes with unique exteriors
Little Hollywood’s streetscapes feature unique and intricate single-family homes with clusters of garden boxes and trees from palms to bays and Brisbane boxes. The neighborhood streets are notably quiet for urban living, providing a more peaceful residential landscape. “The only traffic in Little Hollywood are the people that live there,” O’Sullivan says. “It’s not a traverse area, which is a huge draw.” Most properties are detached and were built in the 1920s and ‘30s, showcasing densely crowded rows of colorful mission-style homes with red tile roofs and stucco exteriors. These initial homes incorporate more stylish designs and architectural flourishes, such as cathedral windows and balconies that draw comparisons to homes in the Hollywood Hills at the time. Later home constructions, including more Spanish bungalows and Mediterranean styles were not as intricately designed as the premier homes but still blend well with the neighborhood’s overall aesthetic. Home prices in Little Hollywood are some of the lowest priced in the city, ranging from $900,000 to $1.3 million. It’s important to note that recycling and waste facilities are located just south of the community but screened fences and rows of trees form a barrier between the residential properties, making it unimpactful for the neighborhood’s residents.

Quaint cafes and historic eateries
While many diverse shopping and dining options are nearby, Little Hollywood has a few small eateries right within the neighborhood. Bayside Café at the northern tip of Little Hollywood is a cozy diner-style spot for breakfast and lunch. It serves classic American fare with some Mexican influences. Aroma Buena Café is one of the newer additions to the neighborhood, with its quaint, trendy interior and classic coffee and sandwich selections. Less than a half-mile west of Little Hollywood on Leland Avenue is Mission Blue, a popular coffee shop meets gift store. The establishment sells local art and other artisan retail items and serves favorite items like lavender lattes and pastries. Further northwest of the neighborhood is The 7 Mile House, a restaurant that originally opened in 1858 as a toll gate before evolving into a pub that survived the city’s devastating 1906 earthquake and Prohibition-era law enforcement raids. The restaurant is now a historic landmark and popular hangout spot, serving patrons a mix of American and Filipino dishes. Little Hollywood residents can grab groceries from Grocery Outlet, a discount supermarket one mile away along Bayshore Boulevard.

Family-friendly neighborhood park and shoreline walking trails
The main neighborhood park is Little Hollywood Park, where residents can bring their kids to the playground, shoot hoops at the full-size basketball court or enjoy a small barbecue by utilizing one of the site’s outdoor grills. Just outside of the neighborhood is Baywood Park. Surrounded by Eucalyptus trees, the site offers beautiful panoramic views of San Francisco and the Peninsula, along with a looped walking and biking trail. Crossing under the Bayshore Freeway along Blanken Avenue leads to the 252-acre Candlestick Point, California’s first urban state park. Abundant with wildlife and native plants, the park features meandering trails along the bay’s waterfront and is a notable spot for fishing and windsurfing. Three miles west of Little Hollywood is the popular John McLaren Park, a massive site with seven miles of paved walking trails plus a golf course, pool and an off-road BMX bike track.

At nearby Candlestick Point Park, the annual “Growing Together” social gathering, which takes place each May, is an area favorite.
