Some of San Francisco’s best addresses
Saint Francis Wood has an alluring combination of architecture, landscaping and location. Historically, it’s always been one of the priciest neighborhoods in San Francisco, mostly thanks to its unique homes. “For that area of the city, those are the best addresses,” says Eddie Sullivan, a founder and Realtor with Elevation Real Estate. “They’re stately looking homes.” Built along the western slope of Mt. Davidson in 1912, the neighborhood was part of the City Beautiful movement, which aimed to harmonize architecture and city planning with the environment. Even the name, Saint Francis Wood, is meant to evoke a vibe of harmony and nature. The neighborhood was planned by the famed Olmsted Brothers architectural firm, who were the minds behind New York City’s Central Park. Saint Francis Wood is organized around St. Francis Blvd, the neighborhood’s tree-lined thoroughfare. Saint Francis Wood’s elaborate planning and architecture led to a historic neighborhood status recognition in 2022.

Forever homes in a garden park
Properties in the neighborhood go for between $2.5 and $5 million. “Every home in Saint Francis Wood is unique,” Kuo says. “They have large yards, which is rare in San Francisco.” Brick Tudor Revivals sit across the street from Mediterranean Revivals with inset balconies. Lawns often have elaborate shrubbery and palm trees, and the streets themselves hug the landscape, thanks to planning by Olmsted Brothers that they would complement the area’s natural topography. The neighborhood's garden-like aesthetics come from Saint Francis Wood’s origin during the City Beautiful Movement, which led to the garden-like streetscapes, and in turn, has created an environment sought after by homebuyers looking to stick around the neighborhood. “You tend to get long-term owners in Saint Francis Wood,” says Sullivan “People don’t come and go very often. If someone buys there, it’s a forever home.”
