San Francisco’s smallest neighborhood
Set beneath the southwestern slopes of Mount Davidson, with its eucalyptus, pine and cypress trees, Sherwood Forest is San Francisco’s smallest neighborhood. “It’s a quiet enclave in the middle of the city that’s a surprise to people who don’t know about it,” says Lance MacHovsky, a Realtor with Heath Real Estate. It’s also one of the highest neighborhoods in the city and has some of the loftiest views in San Francisco. Sherwood Forest may feel high in the sky, but it’s also close to shopping, dining and transportation. “It’s got an interesting feeling that’s like an island in the middle of all the hustle and bustle,” says MacHovsky.
Mount Davidson Park
Mount Davidson rises along the neighborhood’s north side. Medium-grade trails wind through the trees, and its peak shows San Francisco from 938 feet and is the highest natural point in the city. The mountain’s various trees account for 40 acres of the city’s green space and is home to one of the city’s landmarks—a 103-foot-tall cross that stands for the victims of the 1915 Armenian Genocide. Golden Gate Park, one of the city’s most iconic green spaces, is about 3 miles away. Home to gardens, museums and lakes, the park has views that match Mount Davidson’s. In the park is Strawberry Hill, where the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco Bay are visible from it's peak.
Mount Davidson Park is laced with leafy trails.

Mediterranean and contemporary homes
Sherwood Forest’s hilly, sidewalk-lined streets are steep enough to tucker out Robin Hood and his entire band of merry men. Green shrubs and evergreen trees flank the ranch-style, Contemporary and Mediterranean-style houses, many dating back to the 1930s. “People really take pride in being there,” says MacHovsky. “There’s not a lot of turnover for buyers and sellers. It’s the kind of neighborhood where people tend to keep things going and maintain the traditional character [of the houses.]” Almost every property shares one architectural element – a first-floor garage, which is popular all over the city. Three to four-bedroom houses sell for $1.5 to $3.5 million, and homes are typically built within a few feet of each other. Homebuyers should know that Sherwood Forest scores a 2 out of 10 on the CAP Crime Index, lower than the national average of 4.

Shopping at West Portal corridor
West Portal, a bustling shopping and dining district along a half-mile strip of West Portal Avenue, is about 1 mile from Sherwood Forest. There are a handful of small parking lots in West Portal, but many choose to walk from Sherwood Forest unless a shopping trip is in the cards. Essential stores like Four Seasons Market, a grocery store, stand next to restaurants like Trattoria da Vittorio. This Italian eatery offers Calabrian-inspired pizza in a rustic setting, where wood-fired grills crackle behind the bar. Down the street from Trattoria da Vittorio, The Dubliner offers a casual atmosphere to sip a cold beer, play pool and watch sports. Shops like Siren Boutique, Curiosities and GG’s offer clothes, antiques and self-care items.
