Westwood Park's curved streets, a San Francisco rarity

Westwood Park stands out from other San Fran pockets due to its curved streetscape and uniquely designed bungalow homes. Sidewalks and roads encircle the neighborhood's main thoroughfare, Miramar Avenue, which is characterized by lush medians, making it a popular walking route for folks with four-legged friends. This community was designed in the 1920s by the Residential Development Company of San Francisco in response to the 25-foot wide lots and straight, gridded streets that comprised the rest of the city at the time. What they sought to do with Westwood Park was work with the area's hilly landscape — instead of against it — and create a city suburb that felt less congested. This effort was effective, and today, residents enjoy scenic streets and a cohesive, historic aesthetic smack-dab in the south side of San Francisco.

Eclectic bungalows upkept by Westwood Park Association

The cozy and eclectic bungalows of Westwood Park display Spanish Revival and Mission-style architecture, which feature colorful or earthy stucco siding, arches and occasionally terracotta barrel roof tiles. There is some architectural diversity, however. Some homes display Minimal Traditional, Victorian and Craftsman influences. Furthermore, bungalows are not the only kind of build in the neighborhood, though they are the most popular. Ranch and raised ranch-style style homes, American Foursquares and simple two-story residences are also in the area. List prices range from $1.2 million to $3.5 million. To preserve the neighborhood's distinct architecture, maintain its manicured landscaping and take care of the historic gates that welcome residents home every day, Westwood Park homeowners pay annual fees to the Westwood Park Association.

Popping out of Westwood to find parks

There are no parks in Westwood Park proper, despite its name. However, Balboa Park is just a quick trip away via the Muni light rail. This amenity-full green space is home to an array of athletic facilities, including baseball/softball fields, tennis courts and a soccer field.

Ocean Avenue provides what Westwood needs

Ocean Avenue forms the southern border of Westwood Park, lined by convenient stores and local businesses like Sakesan Sushi and Robata, a chic, modern restaurant with a menu of delectable Japanese cuisine. As for restocking the pantry, Whole Foods is also located on Ocean Avenue within walking distance of most Westwood Park properties.

Hopping on the light rail or biking around

Anyone from the Golden Gate City knows walking, biking and public transit are some of the best ways to get around. The San Francisco Municipal Transit Authority, commonly known as the Muni, has several light rail stations along Ocean Avenue.
