Located 5 miles west of downtown San Jose, Bascom-Forest is set within the Rose Garden area, a part of the city known for its family-friendly parks and convenient shopping. Here, the Municipal Rose Garden and two shopping malls are within walking distance of each other, and Jessica Mills, a local resident and Realtor with Intero Real Estate Services, Inc., says that walking is a great way to take in the neighborhood’s beauty and community. “Everybody says hi here, and you have a lot of neighbors who know each other,” says Mills, “There are a lot of new homes and beautifully remodeled homes, but the sense of community hasn’t fallen off, which has been nice.” Local restaurants and shops like Falafel’s Drive-In and Zanotto’s Family Market are close by, and the St. Martin of Tours Parish in the neighborhood’s south has been a community mainstay for over 100 years.

Competitive dancing at Abraham Lincoln High

Picnic at the Municipal Rose Garden

Found in the neighborhood's east, the 5-acre Municipal Rose Garden is known across the city for its 3,500 rose bushes, which bloom from April through November. Mills recommends getting sandwiches from the deli at Zanotto’s Family Market and picnicking at the Rose Garden or in Hester Park, a pocket park with a soccer field and playground. At the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum, home to a large collection of Egyptian objects, kids can enroll in the Junior Archaeologist program and amateur historians can take ancient Egyptian history classes. In the Westfield Valley Fair shopping mall to the west, movie buffs can catch the latest blockbusters at the ShowPlace Icon Theatre & Kitchen.

The family-owned Falafel’s Drive-In in Bascom-Forest’s south has been a local institution for over 50 years; this walk-up counter is known for banana milkshakes and falafel sandwiches, and it’s been featured on Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.” Restaurant chains like Mountain Mike’s Pizza and Bill’s Café are in the neighborhood’s east. Just east of Interstate 880

Interstate 880 borders Bascom-Forest to the west, and Interstate 280 is less than a mile south; residents near I-880 may hear freeway noise. The Diridon Station is 3 miles east, where residents can use the Valley Transportation (VTA) light rail to travel around San Jose or jump on the Caltrain to San Francisco, 50 miles away. Ladybugs at the Municipal Rose Garden

The Municipal Rose Garden holds regular events, including the Great Ladybug Release, a favorite among local kids; thousands of ladybugs are released into the garden to help combat pests, and kids scream in delight at the buckets of harmless bugs released onto the plants.
