Minutes from nature and highways
Oak Ridge, located on the southern edge of San Jose, offers the best of two worlds: Highway 85 connects Oak Ridge to the rest of Silicon Valley, and Santa Teresa County Park connects residents to wilderness hikes and valley views. “You have access to the entire area here, and it’s affordable,” says Ashwin Veeravalli, a real estate agent with The Agency who’s sold homes in the area for 13 years. “It’s going to go up in value in the future because there are so many new homebuyers here. It’s an amazing return on investment.” Oak Ridge’s popularity can be felt in its low housing supply and a 12% increase in home prices from 2023. The overall CAP Index Crime Score is 2 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4.

Ranch-style homes on tree-lined streets
Oak Ridge’s 1960s and ‘70s ranch-style homes sit close together on cul-de-sacs shaded by mature trees. Veeravalli notes that many of these houses have remodeled kitchens and bathrooms, and says, "These aren't flipped homes; they're done by the homeowners." Late 20th-century Mediterranean-style homes and mid-rise apartment communities can be found in the neighborhood’s northeast. Residents near Highway 85 in the north may hear traffic noise.
In May 2024, the median single-family home price was $1.4 million, 10% lower than San Jose’s median of $1.6 million. A three-bedroom 1960s ranch-style home can start at $1.1 million, while a five-bedroom 1990s Mediterranean-style home can cost $2.1 million.

Oak Ridge is bordered by Santa Teresa Boulevard to the south, and State Route 85 (commonly called Highway 85) to the north. U.S. Highway 101 and the regional Caltrain’s Blossom Hill station are 3 miles northeast, connecting residents to downtown San Jose, 11 miles north, and San Francisco, 58 miles away. The Valley Transportation Authority’s (VTA) Cottle light rail station is to the northeast, and the VTA bus makes several stops along Santa Teresa Boulevard. Bike lanes and sidewalks make Oak Ridge friendly for cyclists and pedestrians. Kaiser Permanente’s San Jose Medical Center is in the neighborhood’s east, and San José Mineta International Airport is a 14-mile trip.
Homegrown veggies at La Colina Community Garden
Oak Ridge has two 4-acre parks, both with green space and playgrounds: Calero Park in the neighborhood’s center and Palmia Park in the east. The Blossom Valley Muslim Community Center is to the southwest, and to the northeast, Southside Community Center offers summer camps and art classes. About a mile south of the neighborhood, 25-acre La Colina Park is known for a grassy hill that offers views of the surrounding neighborhoods and the Santa Cruz Mountains; the 2-acre La Colina Community Garden here allows aspiring farmers to rent a plot to grow organic vegetables or flowers. A couple miles farther south, the 1,673-acre Santa Teresa County Park offers over 17 miles of biking and hiking trails, as well as more views; Veeravalli says that from here, "You can see all of San Jose and into Santa Clara.”
Banh mi sandwiches at Pho La
Restaurants and shopping can be found in the southwest. Pho La is known for its traditional Vietnamese pho, but its fried rice and banh mi sandwiches are also area favorites. Locally owned Bistro Tupaz serves European classics like beef stroganoff and cassoulet. The Santa Teresa Farmers Market Fresh is held each Saturday morning in the parking lot of the Santa Teresa Branch Library, and other neighborhood grocery options include Nob Hill Foods and Safeway. Target and other big-box retailers are a mile northeast.

Fireworks at Almaden Lake Park
Almaden Lake Park, a 3-mile drive west on Santa Teresa Boulevard, is home to the area’s biggest celebrations. Fireworks light up the lake at the Fourth of July Fireworks Festival, which also has a costume contest and live music. At the Water Lantern Festival each August, residents decorate paper lanterns in remembrance of loved ones and set them afloat on the lake.
Near the wildland-urban interface
Oak Ridge has a low risk for wildfires, but it’s near the wildland-urban interface, an area of increased risk. Residents may experience reduced air quality during nearby fires in the Santa Cruz Mountains to the south.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
