Quimby offers suburban living in the eastern outskirts of San Jose
Quiet suburban streets connect with the rolling countryside in Quimby. Located in east San Jose’s Evergreen Valley, it’s a family-friendly community known for pricey real estate and highly rated public schools far removed from the hustle and bustle of the city’s downtown. Residents are well placed to take in views of meadowy hilltops that turn bright green in the spring before taking on a brilliant golden color in the fall and winter. “You’ve got some nice views, and it comes with universal appeal of great schools,” says Mark DeTar, an agent with Compass Real Estate, who lives and works in the area. Another notable feature of the neighborhood is The Sikh Gurdwara of San Jose, a Sikh place of worship. It’s the largest Sikh temple in the world outside of India. Its domed roof and elegant architecture house a massive prayer hall that brings around 10,000 worshippers out every Sunday. “It’s a big draw for the area. I’ve had clients who’ve said they’re moving there specifically to be close to their church,” DeTar says.

Groesbeck Hill Park sits at the corner of the neighborhood. It has 26 acres of open space in addition to several sport courts, a playground and picnic tables. Walking paths wind up to a hilltop at the center of the park that looks all the way out to downtown San Jose. A little farther out, residents can take advantage of their proximity to Joseph D. Grant County Park, the largest regional park in Santa Clara County. Its verdant landscape stretches across hills, valleys and mountains encompassing more than 10,000 acres. “As you keep going up Quimby Road toward the park, the road gets steep and windy. It feels like you’ve escaped to another country,” DeTar says.

Quimby’s homes are situated along curved streets and cul-de-sacs with very little through traffic thanks to its out-of-the-way location. Built in the late 1970s and ‘80s, homes here are typically spacious with open floor plans and high ceilings. Lots are between 7,000 and 8,000 square feet, offering plenty of room for landscaping, gardening and backyard get-togethers. Tall palm trees, evergreens and oaks peak out from a sea of rooftops, offering some shade during San Jose’s simmering summer months. Prices range from between $1.7 million and $2.3 million. Safety is also part of the neighborhood’s appeal. It gets a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, compared to 4 nationally.
