A blend of seclusion and convenience near San Jose
Situated 5 miles from downtown San Jose, suburban Tanglewood-El Monte is slightly off the beaten path. It’s within 2 miles of U.S. Highway 101 and a light rail station — just far enough away to feel secluded, but close enough for an easy commute. “It’s a little gem that not everyone gets to see because it’s tucked away,” says Tom Dang, a Realtor with eXp Realty of California who’s sold homes in the area for seven years. “The neighbors are nice and have all lived here for a long time. People don’t really move away from this area. It’s rare that homes come on the market.” Residents here can walk or bike south to Lake Cunningham Regional Park, where there’s a 50-acre manmade lake, water park and California’s largest skate park. Nearby houses of worship include Holy Cross Romanian Orthodox Church and Legacy Church San Jose.

The Reid-Hillview County Airport’s lead contamination
Airborne lead from the Reid-Hillview County Airport has caused children who live within a half mile to have elevated levels of lead in their blood. Leaded fuel is now banned at the airport, lessening the risk of lead contamination. The airport is scheduled to close in 2031, but until then, residents may experience airport noise.
While Tanglewood-El Monte is at low risk for wildfires, nearby mountain areas are at high risk; residents might experience reduced air quality during active wildfires. The last severe fire season was in 2020 when almost 400,000 acres burned in the Diablo Range over 46 days.
