Sprawled along the eastern shore of the San Francisco Bay lies Heron Bay, a quiet and connected suburb with immediate access to gorgeous waterfront golf courses and parks.

While you might think a community on the bay sacrifices convenience for aesthetics, Heron Bay is actually walkable, connected and great for commuters. East Bay Bus Rapid Transit has a route through the neighborhood, and the Bay Area Rapid Transit's San Leandro station is only about 3 miles away, which makes for an easy bike ride. Furthermore, there's nearby access to Interstate 580, so traveling to San Francisco or Oakland is a breeze.

Heron Bay comprises a few different subdivisions, including the manufactured home communities of Mission Bay and Sandev Mobile Home Park, but for the most part, this is a neighborhood of single-family properties built throughout two phases: the early 1970s and the late 1990s into the early 2000s. So, unlike surrounding communities, Heron Bay lacks the distinctive geometric designs of midcentury modern architecture. Instead, the '70s brought Minimal Traditional ranch-style homes, and the late '90s ushered in a wave of Spanish eclectic architecture featuring stucco siding, arches, barrel roof tiles and neutral, earthy tones. Physically and socially, this is a relatively close-knit community, with lots averaging 3,920 square feet, so folks around here tend to get to know their neighbors. Listing prices range from $982,000 to $1.3 million. For a little less than the neighborhood's average sale price, $1,179,428, you could afford a four-bedroom, three-bathroom property.

For the most part, the gridded streets of Heron Bay are lined by homes, sidewalks, driveways and manicured lawns, but this dense residential area is also dotted by commercial pockets, providing the neighborhood with plenty of local businesses and haunts. Dine under the California sun on the patio at El Portal Restaurant while sipping a mangonada, or restock your fridge with fresh produce from the neighborhood market, Foodnet Supermarket.

Green and recreational space spans Heron Bay's shoreline. There's Marina Park, with picnic-perfect lawns and a double-dog-dare-you playground. That said, some of the most action on this side of the neighborhood happens in Marina Dog Park, where canine companions can let loose, show off their agility and make new friends. Next to the park is Monarch Bay Golf Club, where local golfers enjoy stunning waterfront views from the putting greens. Moving farther south, runners, hikers, bikers and nature lovers alike hop on the San Lorenzo Bay Trail, a paved 6.6-mile path that runs along the edge of a restored salt marsh.

Heron Bay is served by the San Leandro Unified School District, so neighborhood kids can start school less than 5 miles from home at James Madison Elementary, which boasts an A-minus rating on Niche. From there, they can attend John Muir Middle before moving on to the last stop on their K-12 journey, San Leandro High. Rated with a B on Niche, this high school is home to three unique academy programs: San Leandro Academy for Multimedia, Social Justice Academy, and Academy for Business and Finance. The business and finance academy is a three-year program that trains students technically and academically via the program's partnership with local businesses. Field trips, mentors, guest speakers and more enrich this program, making it a fantastic opportunity for students to get a feel for what goes into successful businesses, preparing them for post-secondary education and the workforce.

Convenient, scenic and quiet — Heron Bay.
