Waterfront community between San Francisco and Oakland
From the carved seahorses adorning the welcome sign to the mid-century houses’ manicured lawns, Marina Faire’s charm is all about the details. “Marina Faire is a great community right on the bay. It’s mostly 1960s houses, but there are two newer developments from the 1990s for more modern designs. It’s not far from the 880 Freeway, the Harbor Bay Ferry or the San Leandro Marina. It has lots of parks and good nearby restaurants,” says Louise Lovewell, leader of the Lovewell Team at Re/Max Accord with 43 years of experience.
Twelve miles from downtown Oakland and just across the bay from San Francisco, this San Leandro waterfront community is segmented into three distinct sections. Light industrial buildings, including warehouses, wholesale stores and a Coca-Cola bottling center, occupy the eastern border. The interior is entirely residential, and green spaces run along the western shoreline. Residents can enjoy scenic views while boating and fishing in year-round mild temperatures.

Playgrounds and pocket parks
San Leandro has 23 green spaces, and Marina Faire is home to three. Thirty-acre Marina Park is popular with local children, thanks to the large playground area. They can use ropes to scale the climbing gyms, ride across a zip line and zoom down an old-fashioned slide. Other guests come for the mile-long walking trail, sand volleyball courts and the Marina Dog Park. Bonaire Park sits just above Marina Faire. The five-acre pocket park has horseshoe pits, children’s play equipment and an open grassy field. Stryker Island Park rests on a small sandbar and offers a quiet spot for fishing. The Bay Trail starts across the bridge from Neptune Drive. The paved multi-use pathway runs parallel to the water for 6.5 miles. Locals also have easy access to the Marina Golf Course, Monarch Bay Golf Club and the Tony Lema Golf Course.

Established housing along the San Francisco Bay
Marina Faire was built primarily in the 1960s as the city dredged the shoreline to create a small boat harbor. Many of the ranch-style and split-level single-family homes have bay views, and some have been remodeled. “People come for the peaceful atmosphere. The neighborhood is self-contained, so there’s no through traffic, and the residents are often very friendly. They talk to you, which gives it an old-fashioned, neighborly feeling,” says Laurie Pfohl, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty with 30 years of experience. There are also gated condominium and townhouse communities near the shoreline, and every housing type generally sells within two weeks to a month after listing for an average price of $700,000. Condos and townhouses range from $425,000 to $800,000, while midcentury homes start around $650,000 and continue to more than $1 million.

The neighborhood is 4 miles from Oakland International Airport, but the noise level is surprisingly low. Train tracks also bisect the neighborhood’s industrial sector, so houses along Doolittle Drive can hear the whistle. The neighborhood’s CAP Index Crime Score is 3 out of 10, slightly less than the national average of 4. For emergencies, the Alameda County Fire Station sits at the lower eastern corner of the neighborhood, and Kaiser Permanente Medical Center is 2 miles north.
