Outdoor recreation near urban amenities
About 3 miles southwest of downtown, San Luis Obispo’s Laguna Lake neighborhood sits on the west bank of the lake bearing the same name. While residents have access to suburban conveniences with proximity to all the city has to offer, water recreation and hiking are also a major draw for buyers. “You’ve got the lake for paddleboarding, kayaking and fishing, and there’s lots of trails in the area,” says area resident Courtney Huckabay, a broker associate with Comet Realty.
A lakeside park, a nearby golf course and plenty of hiking
While the lake doesn’t allow for motorized vessels, it’s a popular spot for swimming, fishing and non-motorized boats. On the east side of the lake, Laguna Lake Park is a convenient spot for paddleboarders and kayakers to launch from, and offers a 2-mile, dog friendly hiking loop that connects to additional trails through Cerro San Luis. The park is also home to a popular disc golf course, a playground and a sand volleyball court. The park also has a barbeque area with plenty of picnic tables and a large, off-leash dog park. Golfers can tee off from the public 10-hole Laguna Lake Municipal Golf Course just west of Los Osos Valley Road on the neighborhood’s west side. Just west of there, the 720-acre Irish Hills Natural Reserve offers nearly 10 miles of additional hiking and biking trails.
Late 20th century builds with renovations
Homes in Laguna Lake date back to the late 20th century, with most construction completed in the 1980s. “The neighborhood started to get built in the early ‘60s so it’s kind of in this mode where a lot of the original owners are moving on,” Huckabay says. “It’s kind of being revamped right now.” Despite the neighborhood being well-established, many homes have undergone significant renovations and upgrades.
Attached townhouses can be found for under $750,000, while detached single-family homes start closer to $900,000 and range to over $1 million. Most single-family homes sit on lots up to 8,000 square feet and have front-facing two or three car garages.
