A San Marcos neighborhood close to recreation and shopping

Just off Interstate 35, Hunter’s Hill sits about 30 miles south of Austin, sandwiched between the recreational expanse of the Purgatory Creek Natural Area to the north and a hub of shopping to the south. Part of the city of San Marcos, the neighborhood offers a residential atmosphere close to the capital of the Lone Star State. “It’s close to a lot of shopping,” says Adam Carter, a Realtor with Real Broker LLC. “Hunter’s Hill is within about five minutes of Texas State University and two or three minutes of the highway. There are all kinds of restaurants around there. It’s a very convenient location for everything.” The balance of outdoor activities, commercial outlets, highway access and the suburban landscape of the neighborhood itself draws residents to Hunter’s Hill. “San Marcos, in general, is probably the friendliest town I’ve ever lived in,” Carter says. “People love living here. Because it’s a university town, you’d think it’d be a big party place, but it’s not. It’s very family-friendly with an overall friendly atmosphere, but it’s also growing like crazy. I would call it a gateway to the Texas Hill Country, when you drive out down Ranch Road 12.” An array of local events, ranging from mermaid-themed parades to a 260-mile-long canoe race, dot the annual calendar and bring the community together.

Suburban landscapes with trees and sidewalks

The far west side of Hunter’s Hill assumes a more suburban landscape than the rest of the neighborhood, offering homes spaced apart and often separated by trees on the sides and rears of the lots. Most of the homes in that area of the neighborhood date to before the turn of the century, while central and northern Hunter’s Hill have properties that were built after 2000. “Up at the entrance, there are smaller-acreage houses, but at the back, they can be anywhere from 15-to-25-year-old, fairly large homes on one-to-two acres,” Carter says. “A lot of them back up to the Purgatory Creek area that looks over the park. It’s a really nice area.” Those properties are closer together and, while still interlaced with some trees, often have little space between neighboring homes on the sides. Homes in Hunter’s Hill are primarily single-family properties, often constructed as ranch-style homes or as custom modern architectural styles. Stone is a common exterior feature on homes’ facades. Prices often range from around $350,000 to about $500,000. Crime in the neighborhood has a CAP score of 4 out of 10, the same as the national average.

Retail shopping at Red Oak Village and Stonecreek

Restaurants in and near southern Hunter’s Hill include Gills Fried Chicken and San Marcos BBQ, while several other stops sit along Wonder World Drive on the northwest side. Prik Nam Pla serves up Thai food, while Garcia’s has Mexican dishes. Dos Gatos Kolache Bakery and Lamppost Coffee sit close by. “There are so many restaurants around here,” Carter says. “If you go downtown, there’s the Root Cellar Café, Blue Dahlia Bistro and Industry.” Downtown San Marcos is about 3 miles northwest. The Stonecreek Shopping Complex sits just south of Hunter’s Hill and has numerous outlets that include a JCPenney, Target and Academy Sports + Outdoors. Just east, the Red Oak Village Shopping Mall has a Best Buy, Sam’s Club and PetSmart. A distribution center for H-E-B sits in the crook of the neighborhood’s angular shape and serves as a major employer for the area. “H-E-B is a massive employer around here,” Carter says. “Lots and lots of people work there and they love it.”

Miles of trails within and around Hunter’s Hill

Just north of the neighborhood, Purgatory Creek Natural Area spans nearly 600 acres. Visitors can keep an eye out for wildlife, hike on trails or go mountain biking on its grounds. “Purgatory Creek is very big,” Carter says. “If you did all the trails, it would probably be about 12 miles total. There are four big, notable trails in San Marcos that everybody goes to, including Purgatory Creek, Spring Lake and Ringtail Ridge. They’re in the works of connecting as many of them as they can.” Less than 3 miles north of Hunter’s Hill, Wonder World Cave & Amusement Park consists of a wildlife area, an “Anti-Gravity House” and the cave itself, which was formed by an earthquake.

Aquatic events on the San Marcos River

Though the city’s popular Aquarena Springs amusement park closed in 1996 after about 40 years of operation, its legacy still endures in the form of the annual Mermaid Capital of Texas Fest, which celebrates the area’s aquatic ties. “Every year, they have the Mermaid Parade downtown,” Carter says. “People dress up like mermaids and the parade goes through San Marcos.” The Texas State University Bobcats play football at Jim Wacker Field at UFCU Stadium, which sits less than 5 miles northwest. The stadium can hold over 25,000 fans, and the Bobcats play in NCAA Division I’s Sun Belt Conference. San Marcos is also where the Texas Water Safari, nicknamed the “World’s Toughest Boat Race,” begins. Each June, a fleet of canoers take to the San Marcos River and set out for over 250 miles of paddling and floating down to the Gulf Coast. The river is also the site of environmental activities. “Every year, they have a river cleanup day,” Carter says, “where they go into the river and clean out any trash.” Downtown Austin is just over 30 miles north, and locals can head to the city for other events like Austin City Limits, South by Southwest and all the shopping, dining and local attractions that the capital city offers.

Elementary and middle school education within the neighborhood

The San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District serves the Hunter’s Hill area and earns a C-plus overall rating from Niche. Hernandez Elementary School, while Doris Miller Middle School receives a C. Both schools are located within the neighborhood. San Marcos High School sits less than 5 miles southeast of Hunter’s Hill and scores a B-minus. San Marcos High also offers a STEM program and has sports including powerlifting, golf and volleyball. Texas State University’s campus sits less than 5 miles away and enrolls about 40,000 students.

Getting around Texas via Interstate 35

Locals are less than 3 miles from getting on Interstate 35, which runs past the neighborhood to the south and east. The highway runs all the way north to Minnesota, but within the Lone Star State connects San Marcos with Austin, Dallas and San Antonio. Urgent care services are provided to the area by the San Marcos Family Medicine Fastlane Clinic, which sits close to Hunter’s Hill. Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is served by around two dozen airlines and sits about 40 miles away.
