Coveted Marin County suburb in the hillsides
Below the oak tree-studded Marin County hillsides is Marinwood, a suburb that harbors a Northern California secret. “We have our own little micro-climate here, with lots of sunshine and not much fog off nearby San Pablo Bay,” says local Realtor and Marin native Lori Saia Odisio. “The close-knit community here is just wonderful, too, with a truly great school district.” Marinwood is also well recognized for its infamous Eichler midcentury homes, similar to those in neighboring Lucas Valley. While these two neighborhoods share resemblances and area offerings, they are still considered separate communities. “These tend to get labeled together, but residentially, Marinwood is actually its own residential district with its own active HOA and community center, just like with Lucas Valley,” says local Robyn Bruton, a recreation supervisor at the Marinwood Community Services District. Along with a community center that packs the neighborhood’s yearly social calendar, another one of Marinwood’s many perks is that it’s located in one of the most park-centric Bay Area counties. Residents are moments away from vast recreation, from open valley trails to scenic nature preserves.
Marinwood is located off Highway 101 for easy access to San Francisco and Santa Rosa.

Neighborhood parks and nearby nature preserves
The Marinwood Community Center features a 25-yard seasonal outdoor pool for public swimming, while next door is the heavily tree-shaded Marinwood Creek Park. This neighborhood site features sand-cushioned play areas for different age levels, walking paths along the creek, picnic areas and open lawn spaces. Marinwood is just south of the rolling hills, coyote brush and winding nature trails of the 800-acre Marinwood Open Space, which connects with the 1,300-acre Lucas Valley Preserve. It’s known for being a bird-watching area, with golden eagles flying over the hillsides. Nearby, Mt Tamalpais is home to the famous Star Wars filmmaker George Lucas’s Skywalker Ranch, which is closed to the public but visible from the hills. The hills of Mt Tamalpais offer scenic hiking and biking trails, typically surrounded by vibrant wildflowers in the spring and summer.

Tree-lined streets and Midcentury modern housing
Marinwood’s winding tree-lined subdivisions include highly sought-after midcentury modern houses built in the late 1950s by famed builder Joseph Eichler. Known as “California Modern,” these architect-designed houses feature flat or low-slung gabled roofs, exposed post-and-beam construction and open floor plans. Other common housing styles include classic midcentury ranches and Cape Cod varieties. The neighborhood is also home to the exclusive Regency Estates, typically with Spanish-style homes from the early ‘90s on an acre lot. Housing prices range from $1 million to $2.2 million.

The full-service Marinwood Market, which stocks up on hard-to-find gourmet items, is located within the neighborhood. Other shopping and dining offerings can be found right outside of Marinwood. Just east and across Highway 101 is the cool Red Whale Coffee, a go-to spot for nitro cold brew. Nearby, the old-school Smith Ranch Deli and Café serves homecooked, American-style food, while next door, Mulberry Street Pizzeria offers specialty pizzas, including its signature white-sauce mushroom pie. The Terra Linda district is a few miles south, home to Northgate Mall, which has a Safeway for groceries and other big-box stores like Macy’s and HomeGoods. It also has a few local eateries, including the highly rated ALOH-O, a casual Japanese spot known for its bento boxes.

Summer concerts and wine-tasting events
Marinwood has plenty of neighborhood gatherings throughout the year. “The Marinwood community really likes to come out and support all sorts of events here,” Bruton says. Marinwood Park has a summer concert series and a fall festival each October, with local food and drink vendors and live music performances. The Marinwood Community Center hosts numerous events during the year, including the popular Raise a Glass event each March. This wine-tasting get-together brings in 12 wineries from Sonoma and Napa Valley to come in and share wine samples paired with local artisan foods.

Perhaps because of the affluent wealth in this community, the environment is pristine. Beautiful trails and lush forests are available to everyone, all of the time. The majority of residents here are very nature-oriented, and thrive in this neighborhood.

I love San Rafael. It has a good sized population-not too small, not too large. There is lots of preserved nature so there is lots of hiking and trails.

Their is very little crime. The community is very responsive to letting others know if their is any unusual or suspicion behaviour.
