Neighborhood in Santa Ana, California
Orange County 92701, 92705
Santa Ana’s Portola Park neighborhood has two distinctive identities. On the west side of this residential area, the part that borders North Grand Avenue near Sierra Preparatory Academy, there are wide, paved streets, tons of single-story homes and tall, billowing trees doing their best to keep the California sunlight at bay. But once you cross North Wright Street and enter the area that falls within the nearby Tustin Unified School District, the neighborhood gets a lot more classically suburban, with two-story Craftsman-style homes, well-maintained sidewalks and streets that end in cul-de-sacs.
Whether you pick the big shady trees or the cul-de-sacs, you’ll get a taste of the relaxed southern California lifestyle. Everyday amenities including retail stores, restaurants, parks and schools, are also nearby. Santa Ana has a lot of community pride. Families tend to stay from one generation to the next, says Matt Tilley, a Realtor in southern California also known as The British Bloke. It has traditionally had a bit of a reputation, Tilley says, like Compton does in Los Angeles, but it’s improving. “If you actually go to Santa Ana and walk around, there’s a nice downtown area, a college, a lot of students, and they’re spending money,” he says. “If you’re wanting to live in Orange County and you’re on a budget, Santa Ana would be a great place to move now.”
Homes in Portola Park cost anywhere from around $750,000 to north of $1 million. You’ll see Craftsman-style homes for $1 million, ranch-style houses for $960,000 and one-story homes for $800,000. Neighbors can fill prescriptions at the nearby Walgreens and get groceries and everyday essentials at Target. The neighborhood shares its name with a rectangular-shaped park that’s just south of East Santa Clara Avenue. It’s a 9-acre park with picnic areas, a multipurpose field, a basketball court, a walking pathway and a playground with areas for toddlers. The park has tons of open green space to enjoy on a leisurely afternoon, and in years past it’s where the community has held events like movies in the park.
Depending on where they live in the neighborhood, kids in Portola Park will attend either the Santa Ana Unified School District, or public schools for the neighboring city of Tustin. Children on the Santa Ana side are assigned to Sierra Preparatory Academy from transitional kindergarten through eighth grade, and to Santa Ana High School, which is the oldest and largest high school in Orange County. On the Tustin side, children are assigned to Lorna Vista Elementary School for kindergarten through fifth grade, Hewes Middle School for grades 6-8 and Foothill High School for grades 9-12. The Tustin public school system is highly rated with an A from Niche.
Located on the north side of Santa Ana, Portola Park is close to both Tustin and Orange. It’s near the 55, 5 and 22 freeways and just a few minutes away from the 405. It’s a residential area where you can choose between two different ways of life. Whether you live in a ranch-style home behind floral bushes or a two-story at the end of a cul-de-sac, you’ll be home when you’re in Portola Park.
