Comfort and convenience combine in South Coast Metro, a residential neighborhood in Santa Ana offering proximity to an array of schools, parks, shopping and dining. “The main draw is that it’s convenient to shopping and restaurants, which are all within walking distance, and it’s close to the freeway, so it’s very accessible,” says William Wiese, a Realtor with North American Properties who lived in the area for 35 years. “It attracts more older than younger homebuyers, but it’s a pretty good balance. There are enough children that it’s lively, but not so many that it’s noisy.”
Midcentury single-family housing is prominent along the streets of the neighborhood, where the average home price is a little more than $900,000. Multi-level additions of established homes stand out and offer additional square footage. The typical home features a private driveway, with many offering an attached garage and others offering spacious backyards with room for garages and amenities such as pools and guest houses. Custom landscaped yards dot the neighborhood, adding to its curb appeal. A collection of larger contemporary custom homes in a similar subdivision setting also can be found. Multi-family housing includes condominiums in the $400,000 to $700,000 range and manufactured homes at Plaza Village in the $200,000 range.
There are three public schools in the neighborhood. Younger students can attend Greenville Fundamental Elementary School and Jim Thorpe Fundamental Elementary. The latter is adjacent to the campus of Segerstrom High School, an A-rated school by Niche whose football field is a noticeable neighborhood landmark. Students in sixth through eighth grades can attend nearby McFadden Institute of Technology, which offers a variety of STEAM classes.
Residents have a pair of distinct recreational spaces at their disposal. Griset Park is a small tranquil green space featuring a multipurpose field located next to the Greenville Fundamental Elementary campus, while Thornton Park is a large green space that offers an array of options. The 33-acre complex is home to a lake, where popular activities include fishing and feeding the many geese that live there. Ballfields anchor the park’s athletic amenities, which also include basketball courts, walking paths, a colorful fitness court and a handicap-accessible playground.
The neighborhood is located at the southern edge of Santa Ana on the border with Costa Mesa. As such, it is surrounded by stores and restaurants. The Bristol Street corridor, just east of the neighborhood, features several shopping centers. Bristol Plaza is a walkable open-air mall where residents can shop at Trader Joe’s and enjoy comfort food favorites at Black Bear Diner. Target, Aldi and I Heart Pancakes offer alternative retail and dining nearby. A little more than a mile south of the neighborhood along Bristol Street is South Coast Plaza, a collection of luxury stores that makes up one of the largest shopping centers on the West Coast. At its pre-COVID height, South Coast Plaza’s 275 retailers created more than $1.5 billion in annual sales, tops in the United States.
Additionally convenient is the neighborhood’s location in proximity to the region’s freeways. Interstate 405, also known as the San Diego Freeway, intersects with both the Corona Del Mar Freeway and the Costa Mesa Freeway on either side of South Coast Plaza, providing easy access to work commutes and travel throughout greater Orange County.
All the elements of modern life are at your fingertips in South Coast Metro.
