Historic village hugged by the Santa Fe National Forest
Around 15 miles south of Santa Fe, Cañoncito is a historic farming village in the Sangre de Cristo foothills, known for its area-affordability, access to natural spaces and sprawling ranches. “It’s a bedroom community for Santa Fe, where one in every five homes has horse stables,” says James Congdon, an experienced Associate Broker with Santa Fe Properties. Originally established in 1855, Cañoncito was a stopping point for travelers along the Santa Fe Trail after crossing the Glorieta Pass; inns like Johnsons Ranch cropped up to accept visitors, and the small community centered around the 18th-century Nuestra Señora de la Luz Church. Much has remained the same over the years, with ranches bordering the Eldorado and Santa Fe National forests, and locals still meeting at the historic church; the community enjoys an overall CAP Index score of 1 out of 10, compared to the national average score of 4. “It’s lovely because the homes are big, private and far apart," says Andrea Dobyns, "a Santa Fe local and Realtor with EXP Realty, "but the community is still close.”

Custom Northern New Mexican ranches surrounded by desert hills
Tucked away on secluded dirt roads, Cañoncito’s homes sit amid sprawling desert woodlands and steep mountain hills. “With the hills here, you’re going to have trouble getting out the driveway without a four-wheel drive. Trust me — I would know,” Dobyns laughs. Most properties are custom-built Northern New Mexico-style homes from the 2000s to 2020s; common features include pitched metal roofs, colorful wood trimming and tan stucco exteriors. Often set on 5 to 7 acres, many of these homes use their land for casitas (guesthouses), gardens and horse stables; home prices typically range from $475,000 to $700,000, with flatter land fetching higher prices. Santa Fe-style homes from the early 2000s also dot the area, featuring tan stucco exteriors, Mission-style parapets and radial layouts custom-designed to soak up the desert views. Set on around 5 acres, often with casitas and horse stables, these Santa Fe-style homes range from $350,000 to $550,000, again with flatter land costing more. Undeveloped lots are also available, ranging from $75,000 for 2 acres of woodlands to $600,000 for 20 acres with panoramic views of the surrounding desert spaces.

Forests and trails abound
Cañoncito rests between Santa Fe’s high desert woodlands and mountainous forests. The Eldorado Forest borders the community west, its 4,000 acres filled with juniper trees, steep hills and scenic overlooks of New Mexico’s desert plains. Spanning 1.5 million acres across the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the Santa Fe National Forest surrounds Cañoncito to the north and east and is home to numerous parks, trails and the Santa Fe Ski Basin. Cañoncito’s Grasshopper Canyon Trailhead takes hikers into the forest, weaving through towering pines, aspens and unique rock formations. Neighboring Glorieta sits entirely in Santa Fe National Forest land and is home to the Baptist resort Glorieta Adventure Camps and the Glorieta Pass Battlefield; the latter was where the Confederate Army faced their final defeat in the American West, its fields now home to around 2 miles of mountain trails.

Shopping in nearby Eldorado and Old Las Vegas Highway
“You might see mom-and-pop shops show up on the roadside here from time to time, but you’re really going to need to head out toward Santa Fe to find any sort of businesses,” Congdon says. The Eldorado community around 5 miles north is home to the Eldorado Supermart for groceries, Bite Me Bakery for coffee and pastries, and several other retailers and eateries. Around 6 miles up Old Las Vegas Highway, locals can find additional restaurants like the fancy burger joint Jambo Bobcat Bite and the classic diner Harry’s Roadhouse. Downtown Santa Fe’s vibrant shopping and dining scene is only a 15-minute drive away, according to Dobyns.

Immediate Interstate 25 and Old Las Vegas Highway access
Interstate 25 and the Old Las Vegas Highway run through Cañoncito’s center, connecting locals to the Santa Fe Plaza around 15 miles north; although the latter road lacks bike lanes, it is very popular among cyclists. The CHRISTUS Saint Vincent Regional Medical Center is 12 miles north, and the Santa Fe Regional Airport is 23 miles west.
Nearby the weekly Eldorado Farmers Market
Every Friday at the Eldorado Farmers Market, dozens of farmers sell fresh produce, animal products and plants in the nearby Eldorado community. “We love to come here to sell our green chiles and flowers because we’re always a big hit,” says Cole Daeschel, owner of Cedar Grove Nursery. Hosted at La Tienda shopping center around 5 miles north, the Eldorado Farmers Market is popular among the rural communities south of Santa Fe, attracting locals and a variety of vendors beyond farmers. “One of the bakers I know likes to brag he has his best luck in the rain, and he did sell 200 dollars' worth of Danishes to a guy once," laughs Susan Tarver, Director of the local foodbank Bienvenidos Outreach and founder of the farmer's market. "But I always have to tell him to stop saying that so that he doesn’t jinx any rain!”
