Up-and-coming community a walk from the Santa Fe Plaza
On the western edge of Downtown Santa Fe, La Madera is an up-and-coming suburb bound by three major thoroughfares — Alameda Street, Saint Francis Drive and Agua Fria Street — and known for its accessibility. “Lots of younger people are moving into the area because you can walk right to downtown and the Railyard," says Jeff Saiz, a Santa Fe local and Associate Broker with Donna Saiz Real Estate Group, "and it’s affordable if you have the money for renovations.”
Like neighboring Historic Guadalupe and the Baca Railyard District, La Madera first blossomed in the early 1900s, when the Santa Fe Train Depot opened; the area’s blue-collar population grew along with the railyard itself, but when reliance on the railroad industry declined in the 1930s and ‘40s, the neighborhood fell on hard times. By 1987, the City of Santa Fe began revitalizing the Santa Fe Railyard area, and since the Railyard Arts District’s grand opening in 2008, La Madera has continued to grow and redevelop. “It’s a traditional area, but it’s definitely changing,” explains Saiz. “It used to be a rough part of town, but it’s now experiencing a lot of upgrades.”
Santa Fe homes and fixer-uppers at area-low prices
Strewn along winding, busy roads, La Madera’s Santa Fe-style homes are secluded behind coyote fencing and tall adobe walls. Built between the 1920s and ‘50s, these homes share common features like earthtone stucco or adobe exteriors, colorful wood molding, and flat roofs with metal overhangs. Most have between one and four bedrooms and sit on lots ranging between 5,000 and 10,000 square feet. Because La Madera is amid revitalization, many of the properties here have long been vacant and are in need of repair. Prices for fixer-uppers range from $325,000 to $560,000, depending on a home's number of bedrooms; renovated homes range from $760,000 to $900,000, depending on lot size.
Vacant parcels of land are also available here along the Santa Fe River, making in La Madera one of the last downtown areas available for development. Prices vary greatly depending based on size; quarter-acre lots can fetch $360,000, while 2-acre lots can cost nearly $1.5 million.

Downtown Santa Fe, New Solana, and the Siler District
Santa Fe’s eclectic shopping and dining scene surrounds La Madera. “The New Solana Shopping Center is just north across Alameda Street, and you can follow the Santa Fe River downstream toward the Siler District where Meow Wolf is or upstream toward the Plaza,” Saiz says. At the New Solana Shopping Center, the La Montañita Co-op is a community-owned grocery store and natural foods market, and Betterday doubles as a thrift store and coffeehouse. Around 3 miles west in the Siler District, Meow Wolf is an interactive art gallery filled with neon-lit forestscapes and colorful sculptures of woodland creatures. The Santa Fe Plaza a mile east is home to the famous Shed, a cantina-style bar set in an 18th-century hacienda, as well as the independent bookshop and cafe Collected Works.
Alto Saint Park and the Santa Fe River Trail
Alto Saint Park stretches over 15 acres along the Santa Fe River, its lush grounds often busy with group yoga sessions and dog walkers. The Alto Street Community Garden here is filled with fresh chiles and tomatoes, and the park’s baseball fields and tennis courts are favorites among locals. The Santa Fe River Trail crosses through Alto Saint Park and spans nearly 10 miles across the city, linking its neighborhoods and parks along the way.
Santa Fe Public Schools
Local kids can attend Santa Fe Public Schools, including Aspen Community Magnet, which serves kindergarten through Grade 8, and is rated C by Niche. Students can then continue to the A-minus-rated Santa Fe High, where athletes can join the school's long legacy of 28 state championship-winning teams.
Weekly events at the Santa Fe Railyard
The neighboring Railyard Arts District hosts events every week. On Saturdays, the Santa Fe Farmers Market attracts dozens of vendors to the market hall’s stalls, where they sell everything from raw honey to exotic mushrooms. On the final Friday of the month, the Art Walk invites visitors to go museum hopping between the district’s galleries, including the hypermodern Art Vault and the regionally focused Blue Rain Gallery.
