Former railroad town with natural spaces and Old West allure
Around 17 miles south of the Santa Fe Plaza, Lamy is a rural village of small homes and upscale ranches surrounded by desert hills, nature preserves and views of the Sandia and Ortiz Mountains. Named for Archbishop Jean-Baptiste Lamy, the community was an important stop along the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad in the late 1800s, but after an 1898 wildfire destroyed much of the town and the railroad industry slowed in the 1940s, Lamy’s growth came to a halt. Today, century-old institutions like the Lamy Depot, Mission Chapel of Our Lady of Light, and 1881 Legal Tender Saloon and Eat House are still active here, and homebuyers are increasingly attracted to the community’s Old West character, access to natural spaces and proximity to Santa Fe. “You can get a quaint, little old house on the central street, a luxury ranch and anything in between in Lamy,” explains Matthew Tootelian-Rios, a local Associate Broker with Barker Realty. “Plus, you’re getting a rural lifestyle and natural beauty, all within 20 minutes of the city.”

Sprawling Northern New Mexico and Santa Fe-style ranches
Single-family homes and ranches built in the 21st century sit along Lamy’s historic roads, surrounded by vast stretches of savannah grasslands and juniper-piñon woodlands. Lots sprawl from 3 to upward of 10 acres, which locals use for horse stables, gardens, and small guesthouses called casitas. Most homes in Lamy are Northern New Mexico-style from the early 2000s to 2020s, featuring pitched metal or red-tile roofs, French doors and bright stucco exteriors; houses on 3 to 5 acres range from $500,000 to $800,000, while ranches with about 10 acres range from $1.9 million to $2 million. Within Lamy's gated Spirit Wind and Maddog communities, Santa Fe-style homes are set on 3 to 5 acres and feature tan stucco exteriors, flat roofs and exposed wooden beams called vigas; built between the early 2000s and 2020s, these homes range from $800,000 to $1.2 million, depending on age. Much of the land in Lamy is still open for development, with prices starting at $126,000 for a 3-acre parcel and going up to $800,000 for a 100-acre swath of desert hills.

Directly north of Lamy, the Eldorado Community Preserve stretches over 4,000 acres, crossing Highway 285 and the Galisteo River; its nearly 30 miles of trails travel through juniper-piñon woodlands and up to mountain peaks, offering wide views over desert landscapes. The Eldorado Community Preserve’s closest trailheads are found at the Phillips 66 gas station about 7 miles north of Lamy, and 12 miles east in Cañoncito.

Old timey saloons and train station bars
Originally an 1881 mercantile store, the Legal Tender Saloon and Eat House has been the community mainstay for over a century; its authentic Brunswick bar and honky-tonk piano preserve its Old West allure. “The Legal Tender is super famous around here, and super haunted," says Kayla Oritz, a Santa Fe local and owner of Mineralbound Silver. "Way back in the day, a gambler was shot by a stray bullet during a poker game, and his ghost is still there — so they say.” Open only from Friday to Sunday, the Legal Tender’s four dining rooms and bar are nearly always filled with diners enjoying smoked pork quesadillas and the restaurant’s signature dessert, Tender Sunday. Across the street in the century-old Lamy Depot, Nuckolls Brewing Company is set invites locals and travelers to enjoy craft beers and bratwursts while watching the Amtrak train cars rumble by. According to Tootelian-Rios, most locals head 6 miles north to Eldorado for additional shopping and dining options, including the El Dorado Supermart grocery store.

Highway and Amtrak access
Lamy sits on Highway 285, which connects to Interstate 25 around 6 miles north. The interstate leads 17 miles north to Downtown Santa Fe, and according to Tootelian-Rios, traffic is rarely heavy. “Lamy is surrounded by ranches and open spaces, so it only takes around 20 minutes to reach the Plaza,” Tootelian-Rios says. “The Amtrak Zephyr train that runs from Chicago to San Franciso also stops at the Lamy Depot, and still crosses through here twice a day.” Passengers can schedule Amtrak Thru Shuttles to take them from the Lamy Depot to the Santa Fe Railyard, around 48 minutes away. CHRISTUS Saint Vincent Regional Medical Center is 15 miles north, and the Santa Fe Regional Airport is 25 miles northwest.
The central village of Lamy is still small, with a population just over one hundred.

Lamy's wildfire risks
Lamy’s long history is marked with wildfires. In 1898, the entire town — save for the Lamy Depot and Legal Tender Saloon and Eat House — was destroyed by a wildfire, and as of 2023, the town is still listed as a high risk for wildfires by the Energy, Mineral and Natural Resources Department. Lamy lies 8 miles south of El Dorado Fire and Rescue Services, and is protected under Santa Fe County’s Community Wildfire Protection Plan. Homeowners help prevent wildfires by layering their lots with gravel, trimming the lower branches of trees and hiring herds of human-led goats to graze the community’s desert grasses.
