Luxury golfing community with views of the Sangre de Cristos
About 8 miles west of downtown Santa Fe, set among the city's northern hills, Las Campanas is a gated luxury community centered around two Jack Nicklaus golf courses. “Santa Fe was never a golfing community before Las Campanas started growing in 1991,” says Alina Catanach, a Santa Fe local and Qualifying Broker with Las Campanas Realty. “Until the late 2000s, development here was led by Lyle Anderson, who built Arizona golf communities like Desert Highlands and Desert Mountain. But there’s no other Las Campanas.” Initially attracting retirees and second homebuyers, Las Campanas has come to appeal to young families, with its vast array of upscale housing options, views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and an ever-growing list of amenities. “They’ve got fitness centers, tennis courts, horse stables, restaurants and even hair salons. Nothing beats Las Campanas’ good-valued luxury in Santa Fe,” says city resident Paige Cochran, an Associate Broker with Keller Williams Realty.
Private Santa Fe-style homes and lots
Gated subdivisions branch off Las Campanas Drive and Camino La Tierra, their sprawling homes hidden from view behind piñon trees, desert shrubbery and the area’s hilly terrain. “Homes here are custom-built to blend into the high desert landscape, both for privacy and to get the best views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains,” Catanach says. Santa Fe-style homes from the 1990s through early 2000s often feature tan stucco exteriors, wood molding and flat roofs supported by wooden beams called vigas; newer builds tend to have sharper, more modern designs, with larger lots that make them more expensive. A 1990s three-bedroom home on a half-acre starts at about $1.3 million, while a newer five-bedroom mansion on over 4 acres can go for up to $5 million. In new developments like Tesoro Enclave, three- and four-bedroom Mediterranean-style homes range from $1.1 million to $2.9 million. "These homes sit on smaller lots," Catanach says, "with a shared brick plaza area that makes it almost feel like a different country."
“We’re beginning to sell our last 100 lots, leading up to 2025," Catanach says. "When people want to develop here, we introduce them to teams of architects to help them custom-build their homes.” Prices range from $50,000 for half an acre to nearly $600,000 for over 5 acres.
Members-only golf courses and training facilities
“The golf courses are really what Las Campanas is all about; no other place in the city comes close to what they have,” Cochran says. Named Sunrise and Sunset, these two eighteen-hole courses were designed by Jack Nicklaus to soak in the neighborhood’s panoramic mountain views, and although both are relatively short at around 7,500 yards each, they provide a challenge with their numerous bunkers and blind turns. Golfers can improve their game at the 19-acre Practice Facility, which features a Performance Center with two Trackman Launch monitors and PGA-accredited staff members who give lessons. Access to Las Campanas' golfing facilities is exclusive to Golf Membership holders; memberships cost $150,000 plus monthly fees and are limited to 525 members. Las Campanas is also surrounded by hundreds of acres of open space and nature trails, including the massive Diablo Canyon Recreation Area immediately west, but most locals prefer to stick to community's golf courses for outdoor fun, says Catanach.
The Social Membership's fitness center and equestrian facilities
At Las Campanas’ Fitness and Wellness Center, seven clay tennis courts, four pickleball courts and an indoor lap pool are open year-round; two outdoor pools are open seasonally. Fitness professionals help residents develop exercise regimens in the gym room, and after working out, folks can relax in the sauna, receive massages or even get their hair and nails done at the salon. Catanach's personal favorite offering, though, is the Equestrian Center. "I always tell my clients they have to see it," she says, "because it’s so beautiful.” Draped in wisteria, the Equestrian Center is home to a spacious indoor riding arena, and 80 stables where staff members watch after members’ horses; it opens to over 68,000 acres of hillsides and trails where members can go on rides or guided tours. Access to the Equestrian and Fitness and Wellness centers is limited to Social Membership holders; memberships cost $75,000 plus monthly fees and are limited to 350 members.
Fiestas de Santa Fe nearby
"People here head to the Santa Fe Plaza for events. It's the heart of our city's arts and culture," Catanach says. For a week in September, the annual Fiestas de Santa Fe is one of the city's largest events, signaling the end of summer. As Cochran explains, "The Fiestas start with a sort of parade of La Conquistadora — one of the country's oldest Virgin Mary statues — where she is taken from the Cathedral Basilica, through the Plaza and to the Rosario Chapel by the cemetery. Then for around a week, they hold masses at Rosario and other events like the Burning of Zozobra happen in the Plaza and all over downtown, all until La Conquistadora is brought back to the cathedral. It's all really quirky and historic, but that's what makes it so Santa Fe."
Fine dining within the neighborhood
There are several dining options within Las Campanas. The Club serves everything from Irish salmon dinners to upscale pub grub in its rustic hacienda-style dining room and bar; during the warmer seasons, diners can also enjoy their meals on the Torreón Portal patio, which overlooks the Sunrise Course’s ninth hole. “They’ve got rotating world-class chefs here who work two years at a time, so the food is always spectacular,” Catanach says. On Mondays and Tuesdays, when the Hacienda is closed for cleaning, residents can enjoy Southwestern comfort food and specialty cocktails at the casual Log Cabin; every day at the Fitness Center, folks can enjoy healthy breakfasts and smoothies after working out. Las Campanas residents need to leave the neighborhood for groceries, though; the closest supermarket is Smith’s, over 10 miles away.
Nearby Santa Fe Public schools
Students here can attend Kindergarten through Grade 8 at Gonzales Community School, which earns a B-minus from Niche and partners with Cooking with Children to teach kids about healthy eating and cooking habits. They can then continue to A-minus-rated Santa Fe High, which offers specialized engineering, culinary arts and JROTC programs.
A quick drive from the Santa Fe Plaza
Las Campanas sits about 8 miles west of the Santa Fe Plaza and is bordered by County Road 77 to the north; this roadway connects to Veterans Memorial High 5 miles away, which leads to Interstate 84 around 9 miles from the neighborhood. Although multi-use paths for walking, cycling and golf carts can be found across the neighborhood, Las Campanas is neither walkable nor bikeable. “It’s not one of those golfing communities where you see people riding golf carts around — it’s too big for that, so you’ll need a car,” Catanach says. CHRISTUS St. Vincent Regional Medical Center is 11 miles southeast, and the adjacent Santa Fe Regional Airport and Jet Center at Santa Fe are 15 miles southwest.
