About Satellite Beach, FL

About Satellite Beach, FL

Oceanfront community close to the aerospace industry

Satellite Beach is a longstanding community with proud military roots and a relaxed, vacation-worthy atmosphere of golden beaches and towering palm trees. The city is part of a collection of communities on a barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian River Lagoon, part of the Intracoastal Waterway. "It's a tight-knit community where we all know each other. It's very family-friendly, the schools are highly rated and the homes are less expensive than some areas farther south down the A1A," says Realtor Paige Lane, who has been selling homes for nine years with Keller Williams Brevard. "There is a large number of military families here, and many people choose to come back to retire. I've had people tell me that out of all the places they were stationed, this is the one area they knew they'd come back to." The community has that small beach town feel, but it's less than 10 miles from downtown Melbourne, less than 20 miles from the retail hub of Viera and only 60 miles from Orlando. Proximity to these larger areas lets residents enjoy a laidback lifestyle without missing any amenities.

Close to Patrick Space Force Base

The military and defense contractors drive the area's economy. Patrick Space Force Base is the largest employer, and Lane says, "There is a significant military presence and opportunities with the Space Force, Coast Guard and Navy." Northrop Grumman and Collins Aerospace have major facilities nearby, and NASA's Kennedy Space Center is just up the road. "That gives us a lot of stability here. We're not necessarily recession-proof, but we are recession-resistant," Lane says.

Over 20 beach crossovers in Satellite Beach

There are over 90 miles of public coastline in Brevard County, and Satellite Beach features nearly 20 beach crossovers and three beach parks: Hightower Park, Seaside Park and Paradise Park. The public beaches are not dog-friendly, like those in some nearby communities, but people are almost always running, swimming, surfing and sunbathing. During warmer weather, pods of dolphins swim by the beaches, and fishing boats dot the horizon. Freshwater anglers can visit the various parks along the Indian River Lagoon and its canals, including DeSoto Park. "During colder weather, you can go to the canal there and watch manatees that come in from the river to stay warm," says Bowling. Visitors to DeSoto Park can look for manatees, use the park's playground or athletic fields or run around the park's lake.

Oceanfront condos and homes on Indian River Lagoon

Most of Satellite Beach's original midcentury homes are still there, though many have been renovated. "This area all started as housing for the military base but expanded across the city to the riverside," says Bowling. Most homes are one-story and closely built on winding roads lined with palm trees and Norfolk Island pines. During the winter holidays, residences are cheerfully dressed with decorations and lights. Some homes are set on canals where manatees might be found or on the Indian River Lagoon, where many have private docks. Larger, luxury gated subdivisions and condo buildings are spread across the city. According to Niche, the median sale price in Satellite Beach is $428,600, about 52% higher than the national average of $281,900. There are often HOA fees for homes in gated subdivisions or condos, ranging between $100 and $1000 monthly.

Shopping and dining along the A1A

Most of Satellite Beach's dining and retail is concentrated around the A1A. There are few chains here, but most of this commercial area consists of locally owned and operated shops and businesses. There are also beloved, longstanding restaurants like Long Doggers, a local chain known for its fried seafood baskets and foot-long hot dogs. There is also a Publix Super Market. "There tend to be fewer and fewer commercial areas along the A1A as you go south," says Lane. "Satellite Beach features the most shops and restaurants, and there are fewer and fewer until you get to Melbourne Beach, which is primarily residential." Residents also travel to Melbourne or Viera for larger shopping centers or the upscale dining spots on New Haven Avenue in downtown Melbourne.

Close to the Melbourne Orlando International Airport

The A1A Jimmy Buffet Memorial Highway is the city's main thoroughfare, connecting all the towns along the Brevard County coast and beyond. The road connects to Highway 404, which brings islanders to the mainland. This road travels to Interstate 95, which runs the length of the East Coast. The closest Space Coast Area Transit Routes are in Melbourne Beach. Satellite Beach is 10 miles from downtown Melbourne, 16 miles from Avenue Viera and 20 miles from Cape Canaveral and Port Canaveral. The community is also about 65 miles from Orlando, offering an easy access point for more dining, retail and entertainment. "I love that we're only an hour's drive from Orlando," says Realtor and broker associate Monica McKune of Keller Williams Brevard, who has sold homes for over 20 years. "I can take my kids to Disney whenever we want, go shopping at some of the outlets or get a direct flight from the Orlando Airport." In addition to the Orlando International Airport, residents can fly from the Melbourne Orlando International Airport, 10 miles from Satellite Beach. The nearest medical center is Orlando Health Melbourne Hospital, less than 10 miles away.

Weather and crime in Satellite Beach

Satellite Beach has hot, humid summers and mild winters, with frequent storms and hurricane threats throughout the summer. "One of the perks of living here is that the ocean breeze keeps us cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter than in inland cities like Orlando," Bowling says. According to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement's Uniform Crime Report, crime in Brevard County has trended down for both property and violent crimes since 1996, the year the FDLE launched its summary reporting system. Between 2016 and 2021, the most recent year tracked by the FDLE, crime in Brevard County fell by about 40 percent.
