Modest bungalows, ranches and Minimal Traditional homes

Located about 3 miles from Savannah’s main downtown area, lots in Avondale are bigger than surrounding areas, and homes sit on leafy, tree-filled lawns. Homes in Avondale are relatively modest compared to surrounding communities, with two- and three-bedroom bungalows, ranches and Minimal Traditional homes comprising most of the neighborhood’s housing stock. Many residences have welcoming front porches and incorporate pops of color, whether it be a brightly painted door or vibrant pink azaleas in the front yard. Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools and schools of choice

School-age children may attend Shuman Elementary and Hubert Middle schools, which both earned C-minus grades from Niche. Older students may attend Johnson High School, which earned a C and was named a 2022 School of Excellence by ACT’s American College Application Campaign. The program honored just 23 schools nationally that are helping students pursue postsecondary success. High schoolers may also attend Savannah Arts Academy, an A-plus-rated arts school that offers majors in film studies, theatre, visual arts, dance and several music programs. The school is public but requires an academic screening and audition for acceptance.

Avondale Park and Savannah Botanical Gardens

At Avondale Park, kids can climb on the monkey bars, swoop down the slide or throw a football in the open green space while parents watch from the nearby bench. The park is partially fenced in with chain-link and encircled by houses and neighbors. Shopping and dining less than a mile away in Victory Heights

Less than a mile south, the trendy Victory Heights neighborhood has a variety of local restaurants to delight the senses: “Victory Heights has become trendier recently with creative types moving in. It’s definitely funky and more artistic,” Oxnard says. For delicious soul food, locals swing by Sisters of the New South, a family-owned restaurant serving Southern classics like fried chicken, barbecue ribs and smothered shrimp and grits with sides like okra and collard greens. At Geneva’s Famous Chicken and Cornbread, locals enjoy soul food with a kick, with dishes like shrimp po’boys and Cajun fried turkey wings. Avondale residents shop along Victory Drive and Wallin Street in Victory Heights. Local artists and entrepreneurs sell their wares at VENDORS ON VICTORY, and residents can also find big box stores like Target and Whole Foods for everyday essentials.

With the Harry Truman Parkway cutting just west of the neighborhood, residents can quickly navigate around Savannah. Avondale is within 4 miles of Downtown Savannah, Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), Savannah State University and Candler Hospital, and is less than 15 miles southeast of Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport.

Vertu Farm is an urban farm in the neighborhood that sustainably grows organic produce. The farm has a farmstand in Avondale and also sells its produce at the Forsyth Farmers Market less than 3 miles east of the neighborhood in Downtown Savannah.
