Benjamin Van Clark is a historic eastside Savannah neighborhood undergoing revitalization. Historic homes, passed down through generations of families, are getting renovated and resold, drawing buyers looking to be close to downtown Savannah but wanting something easier on the wallet. "Downtown is really expensive right now, so here you can get an affordable house and still be 5 minutes or less to downtown and 20 minutes to the beach," says Wynn Martin, a Realtor with Eighteen O'Two Realty, who sells throughout the Savannah area. "It's really up-and-coming right now."

A mix of homes at affordable prices
The neighborhood offers a mix of three- and four-bedroom home styles, including 1920s-era Craftsman-style bungalows and newer Stick-style builds with steeply pitched roofs and covered front porches. They sit on compact lots, surrounded by tall, mature oak trees, with landscaped yards. Most homes offer driveways, but the streets are wide enough for extra parking if needed. Sidewalks throughout the neighborhood allow residents to walk to nearby parks and bus stops along East Henry Street and East Anderson Street. Prices range from $225,000 to $600,000, with more expensive homes featuring extensive renovations.
Residents get fresh air at Live Oak Park
Locals head to Live Oak Park to get out in the sunshine. This pocket park is a regular gathering spot for the neighborhood, where it's common to find kids practicing jump shots on the basketball courts, playing on the playground shaded by tall trees, or kicking the ball around on the large grassy field. Golf enthusiasts can join the private Savannah Golf Club, whose membership includes access to the 18-hole course, tennis courts and outdoor pool.
Many shopping and dining options
Shopping is limited in the neighborhood, but many locals run errands at the big box stores off Truman Parkway, which offers Kroger, Whole Foods and Target. Savannah's historic district also offers shopping at locally owned shops. While there, residents dine at a variety of restaurants dotting the streets. A local favorite is The Olde Pink House, which serves quintessential southern dishes like cornbread fried oysters and she-crab soup. Another go-to is Flock to the Wok, an upscale Chinese restaurant popular for its lunch and take-out specials.
Savannah Arts Academy serves future artists
The Savannah-Chatham County Public School System serves the area, and many kids attend Savannah Arts Academy for high school. It has an A-plus on Niche and is the city's first dedicated performing and visual arts school. It serves just over 900 students and has a student-teacher ratio of 15-to-1. Kids often start school at Williams Elementary, which has a C-minus on Niche, and then move on to Hubert Middle School, which also has a C-minus.
SCAD students get colorful in Forsyth Park
Residents can take advantage of multiple annual events thanks to the nearby Savannah College of Arts and Design (SCAD). One popular event is the Sidewalk Arts Festival, when current students, SCAD alums and local high schoolers take over nearby Forsyth Park and turn its sidewalks into a landscape of colorful chalk drawings. The city also hosts the Savannah Irish Festival, which draws huge crowds.
Take Truman Parkway and CAT busses to get around
Truman Parkway runs along the neighborhood’s east side and connects to other major thoroughfares, Route 80 and Interstate 516, giving residents access to the coast and west Georgia. For those who take public transportation, the Chatham Area Transit (CAT) bus line runs throughout the neighborhood, with stops along Wheaton, East Henry and East Anderson streets.
