Cleared for landing at Hunter Army Airfield
Leeds Gate-Colonial Village offers the kind of convenience Southside Savannah is known for, regardless of military affiliation. It may be right beside Hunter Army Airfield, but the community is mostly civilian, says Alison Harris, a Harris Home Team Realtor at Keller Williams with 18 years of experience as both an agent and a resident of Savannah. But even though many who live here will never set foot on the airfield, Harris says it’s still a big part of daily life. “The neighborhood isn’t directly in the flight path, but you’ll definitely hear planes and helicopters. You can even hear them play TAPS at night, and the sound travels even farther when it’s cloudy,” she says. Still, Harris says it’s the location that attracts homebuyers here. If not for the airfield, then for the proximity to St. Joseph’s Hospital, Oglethorpe Mall, Truman Parkway and Georgia Southern University’s Armstrong Campus. The neighborhood is also convenient to several churches along West Montgomery Road and the Islamic Center of Savannah. And with downtown only 6 miles away, all the charm and history of the city is easily within reach.
Renovations bring fresh floorplans to Leeds Gate
Brick ranch-style, split levels and contemporary bungalows built between 1970 and the late 1990s are common here. Averaging less than 2,000 square feet, many of these properties boast extensive interior renovations, giving new life to some of the area’s older and outdated floorplans. Modest lots leave room for backyard pools, landscaped lawns and flowering trees, while townhouse options offer a more maintenance-free lifestyle. “It’s a very entry-level area. There are some nicely sized homes, but there are also apartments and independent living facilities for seniors,” Harris says. Buyers can expect to find most three- and four-bedroom properties listed between $230,000 and $350,000, while two- and three-bedroom townhouses and condos range from $125,000 to $270,000.

Hunter Golf Course is open to the public
The 18-hole Hunter Golf Course is on the outskirts of its namesake airfield. Although it’s operated by the US Army, it’s open to the public. Avid golfers may be interested in signing up for a membership, which extends to Taylor Creek Golf Course at nearby Fort Stewart. La Vida Golf Club also provides a semi-private option nearby. About 5 miles east, Bacon Park’s golf course provides even more space for perfecting technique. Lake Mayer Park includes a literal island of recreation, with a skatepark, playground, baseball field and tennis courts surrounded by the fully stocked fishing lake. Savannah Botanical Gardens is most popular in spring and summer, but the Chatham County Aquatic Center and Jennifer Ross Sports Complex host local leagues throughout the year. Closer to home, dogs can roam the off-leash area while kids explore the playground at Windsor Neighborhood Park.

Find southside Savannah’s best shops and restaurants on Abercorn Street
The neighborhood’s closest major road is Abercorn Street, home to a combination of car dealerships, small businesses and colorful local restaurants such as The Hideaway Café, a local stop for pizza, tacos and burgers. Beside the Walmart Neighborhood Market, Troy Mediterranean Cuisine serves authentic gyros and baklava in an elegant dining room. Jalapenos Authentic Mexican Grill offers a more laid-back experience for those heading north toward Kohl’s and Best Buy at Oglethorpe Plaza. The next intersection reveals the massive structure that is Oglethorpe Mall, the largest — and only — indoor shopping mall on Savannah’s southside, with more than 100 storefronts ranging from department stores to boutique jewelers. There’s also a hearty food court here, although many locals save their appetite for the New York-inspired bagel sandwiches at Midtown Deli across the street. And if that’s not enough options, nearby Savannah Centre has shoppers covered with Kroger, T.J. Maxx, Burlington and more.

City-wide celebrations are a hallmark of downtown Savannah
Every February, Chatham County celebrates its rich floral history during the Savannah Camellia Festival and bloom show. The event kicks off with a parade a few blocks north of Bacon Park and culminates with a 5K run at Lake Mayer Park. Events are a big part of downtown Savannah’s allure, and residents of Leeds Gate-Colonial Village are just 6 miles away from attending longstanding traditions such as the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade, the Savannah Jazz Festival and the SCAD Savannah Film Festival.
Students can walk to Largo-Tibet Elementary
The neighborhood is part of the Savannah Chatham County Public School System, which offers a choice lottery program for students hoping to attend a school outside their attendance zone. Windsor Forest Elementary, rated C-plus on Niche, and Pulaski K-8, a new expansion school currently unrated on Niche, serve the community following the 2024 closing of Largo-Tibet Elementary. C-rated Windsor Forest High was recently named one of five AP Honors Schools by the Georgia Department of Education in recognition of its growth as an AP Expansion School. A brand-new building is set to open on the campus in 2025, and the county plans to turn the existing school structure into a larger parking lot for students and staff.
