Give me liberty, or give me death
Less than 4 miles south of downtown Savannah, Liberty City locals love the freedom their neighborhood gives them. This close to the city center, minutes from main thoroughfares like Interstate 516 and Abercorn Street, there are retail and restaurant options galore around here. But the quiet residential streets offer respite from the surrounding city, too, with stately live oak trees and spacious lawns and gardens acting as natural buffers. And there’s no HOA controlling community aesthetics. “Liberty is a nice city community where you can become a green thumb,” says Realtor Erica Ferrell, a Savannah local and owner of Properties By Me, adding that little homestead-style gardens are common here. There’s even a small farm in the neighborhood. “The market is picking up and steady,” Ferrell says, attributing its growing popularity to its stability and convenience. Many homes here have had fewer than three owners; with its blend of urban access, rural charm and suburban atmosphere, it’s not hard to see why homeowners plant deep roots.

Retail and restaurants nearby
Grab groceries and other everyday essentials at the corner of Liberty Parkway and Ogeechee Road, where there’s a Red & White Foods and a Family Dollar. Both stores are less than a mile from most Liberty City homes. There are lots of shopping and dining options on Abercorn Street, too, a little farther afield at about 4 miles from most homes. The bustling main thoroughfare is home to grocery stores like The Fresh Market and Publix, as well as clothing retailers like J. Crew Factory and Jos A. Bank. Near Publix, there’s also Bonefish Grill and OAK 36 Bar & Kitchen for when the itinerary calls for a meal out. For a brewski, locals don’t need to venture even that far, though, with Coastal Empire Beer Company off Nettles Road in the heart of the neighborhood. The award-winning brewery’s taproom is pet-friendly. But, as their website warns, alligators must be kept on a leash.

The greatest hits in housing, of yesterday and today
There’s an eclectic array of homes here, from midcentury ranch-style homes and classic 1970s Split Levels to 1980s Colonial Revivals and even Craftsman-inspired and Traditional-style new construction. Prices for these single-family homes are just as varied, ranging anywhere from $97,000 for a three-bedroom bungalow in need of cosmetic repair and updates to more than $425,000 for a four-bedroom Traditional-style new build. Properties here are spacious; many homes feature neatly maintained lawns and gardens, with stately live oaks and pine trees. “It’s the kind of community where you can have a small garden or farm on your property,” says Ferrell. “There’s an actual farm with horses, but it doesn’t stick out like an eyesore.”

Liberty City Community Center
Off Mills B Lane Boulevard, the local rec center offers tons of opportunities for fun and movement both indoors and out. There’s a playground, a picnic pavilion and a paved trail around the little lake out back for when the weather’s nice. But on rainy days or when it’s too hot to enjoy the sunshine, head inside and take advantage of the center’s full sports complex. There’s everything from a gymnasium and fitness room to a computer lab and meeting rooms, where locals can enjoy programs like the weekly Coffee & Conversation get-togethers or craft and dance classes. Across Mills B Lane Boulevard from the community center, Laney Contemporary Fine Art has showcased emerging and established artists from Savannah and around the world since 2017. The gallery presents themed exhibitions as well as free artist talks on a regular basis and hosts events like outdoor movie screenings and dining experiences throughout the year.
