What life is like in Oakdale

Oakdale is named for the tall oak trees shading its streets. The neighborhood is between midtown and Savannah’s southside, and major roads are close, so it gives you access to amenities throughout the city. Unlike some nearby communities, Oakdale doesn’t have a homeowners association, which means no HOA fees and fewer restrictions. But with single-family homes on tidy lots and convenient access to everyday needs, parks and schools, it has a traditional neighborhood feel.

Housing ranges from condos to single-family homes

Most of Oakdale's residential streets are secluded, branching off Habersham Street and Waters Avenue toward the community's center, where a creek runs. Because of this, many roads end in cul-de-sacs or dead ends. “It’s a quiet, established neighborhood with mature oak trees and winding streets,” says real estate agent Carol Anne Hazelman of Keller Williams Coastal Area Partners, a longtime Savannah resident. “There’s a mix of housing styles that gives it a charming, suburban feel, and it stays peaceful because there’s limited through traffic.”

Townhouses and condos typically range from the low $200,000s to the mid-$300,000s. Ranch-style homes generally fall between the high $200,000s and the mid-$500,000s, with most offering between 1,500 and 2,000 square feet. Colonial Revivals and single-family residences with French architectural influences, like hipped roofs and decorative shutters, can range from the low $600,000s to the high $900,000s. Rental options, including apartments, are also available. Homebuyers should know that some houses fall into low-risk flood zones, and stormwater drainage issues are common throughout Savannah.

Local dining, shops and services are easy to reach from Oakdale

“Oakdale has a suburban feel, but it’s close to urban amenities,” Hazelman says. The neighborhood is home to several local dining options, including Sweet Potato’s Kitchen, known for its Southern-inspired menu. For something more laid-back, there’s BowTie Barbecue Co., while Toni Steakhouse offers a more upscale experience. Nearby Eisenhower Square features Planet Fitness, fast-casual restaurants and everyday services. CVS Pharmacy and Dollar General are also in Oakdale.

“It’s in a good location with easy access to local shopping,” Hazelman says. “You’re close to the southside, midtown and the historic district.” Within roughly a 5-mile radius, you’ll find:

  • Abercorn Walk and Twelve Oaks, adjacent shopping centers with grocery stores, clothing retailers and restaurants
  • Oglethorpe Mall, anchored by Barnes & Noble, JCPenney and Macy’s
  • Habersham Village, a quaint, eclectic strip of local businesses, including grocery and pet stores
  • The Starland District, an artsy corridor known for galleries, cafes, bars and live music venues
  • River Street, Savannah’s cobblestone-lined hub for shopping, dining and entertainment

Recreation nearby ranges from youth sports to lakefront trails

Neighborhood kids can spend time at the Habersham YMCA, the Jenkins Athletic Club, which offers youth sports, or The Jam, which hosts gymnastics-style camps and programs in a safe, structured environment. Large parks are also nearby. Named for the 35-acre body of water at its center, Lake Mayer Community Park brings a range of activities, including a skatepark, tennis courts and a remote-controlled racetrack. “People really like the fishing spots and trails,” Hazelman adds.

Daffin Park is also close and features a swimming pool, dog park, playground, athletic facilities and a walking trail that circles its lake. Home to Grayson Stadium, the park fills with Savannah Bananas fans during baseball season. Throughout the year, it hosts events, from the St. Patrick’s Day Rugby Tournament in the spring to Trunk or Treat and Howl-O-Ween in the fall.

Oakdale is served by the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System, with school assignments based on address. The district offers magnet-style, application-based choice programs. Admission is determined by lottery, and some arts-focused programs require auditions. Open-enrollment transfers are reviewed and approved on a case-by-case basis. The city also offers many private options. Several highly rated schools are located in or near Oakdale, including:

  • Virginia Heard Elementary School, a STEAM-certified public elementary school
  • Memorial Day School, an independent Christian school serving prekindergarten to 12th grade
  • Benedictine Military School, an all-boys Catholic high school

What the commute’s like from Oakdale

Sidewalks, bike lanes and limited cut-through traffic make Oakdale walkable and bikeable. “The way the streets are set up, it’s kind of off the beaten path,” says DeAnna Baggett, a Realtor with Realty One Group Inclusion, with experience selling throughout Savannah. “No one’s driving through the neighborhood to get somewhere else. And the only things you’ll really hear are the ambulances.” Memorial Health University Medical Center and the surrounding care facilities are about 2 miles north. Chatham Area Transit bus stops are nearby, but most people drive to get around. Major roads, including Harry S. Truman Parkway, East DeRenne Avenue, Interstate 516 and U.S. Route 80, can be reached in about 3 miles. Hunter Army Airfield is about 2 miles away, and Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport is roughly 20 miles away. Historic Savannah is about a 7-mile drive, while the beaches of Tybee Island are approximately 20 miles to the east.
