Sans streetcars, historic Thomas Square maintains sense of convenience
In the late 1800s, the electric streetcar played a key role in populating the neighborhoods south of downtown Savannah, earning this area the title Thomas Square Streetcar District, designated as a National Historic District in the late 1990s. Although the streetcars don’t run anymore, Thomas Square has maintained this historic neighborhood’s sense of convenience and connection by integrating local businesses and public transportation with the already charming homes. Years of revitalization efforts, often led by graduates of the Savannah College of Art and Design, have fueled the creation of artsy spaces and local restaurants, which make up most of the popular Starland District. But Thomas Square has also become a haven for families looking for a quieter neighborhood with access to good schools and city amenities. “In Thomas Square, you’re getting out of the urban and into the more suburban feel,” says Staci Donegan, an associate broker with Seabolt Real Estate who lives in downtown Savannah. By combining historic appeal with a trendy outlook, Thomas Square has solidified itself as one of Savannah’s most vibrant communities.
Locals dine in Starland District
Named after the original Starland Dairy that once resided on Bull Street, the Starland District is now the focal point of local shopping and dining for Thomas Square residents. Years of revitalization have helped this block of local businesses transform into a buzzing and colorful corridor with everything from antique stores to the welcoming Starland Yard Food Truck Park, all marked with creative, hand-painted signage. For bagels, locals often head to Big Bon Bodega, where customers can dine outside in the shade of red-striped umbrellas. Foxy Loxy Café is a combination coffee shop and Tex-Mex eatery with an inviting patio and weekly live music. When it comes to grocery shopping, locals usually head up to the Kroger on East Gwinnett Street for anything they can’t find at small neighborhood markets.

Citywide events at Forsyth Park
Historic Savannah loves to host events, and residents of Thomas Square have a front-row seat to all the action, whether it’s the 200-years-running Saint Patrick’s Day Parade or the more recent addition of Starland District block parties. The city comes to life during these celebrations, gathering at Forsyth Park for the annual jazz festival and counting down to midnight on New Year’s Eve at City Market. Thomas Square has historic and modern housing
In Thomas Square, wide sidewalks lead past a mix of contemporary Craftsman-inspired duplexes and ornate Victorian and Queen Anne architecture that reflects the same eclectic look found in the more expensive Landmark District. “The people buying in Thomas Square are typically the buyers that can’t afford the Landmark District,” Donegan says, noting that with an average sale price under $700,000, Thomas Square is significantly cheaper than the million-dollar properties to the north. Thomas Square also comes with another advantage, which makes the area especially attractive to families. “The houses and the lots are larger, so it mimics more of a suburban neighborhood feel,” Donegan says.
