West Savannah is “where everyone wants to be”

Quiet, walkable and close to downtown, West Savannah is a community that has everything going for it. But this was not always the case. The neighborhood's revitalization was set in motion by the city back in 2005. Revitalization plans brought new multifamily units, single-family homes, sidewalks, green space, bus stop amenities and overall repair to the community. "West Savannah has changed a lot," says Cynthia Sinclair, the broker and district director of Fathom Realty GA. She's been in Savannah her whole life and grew up in West Savannah. "There are a lot of new construction houses, so value has increased, but it's still affordable. Honestly, it's where everyone wants to be now since it's close to downtown and River Street. Everything's on the bus line, too. Homes here sell quickly." A lot of improvements have come the neighborhood’s way – and there are more en route – but one thing this area has always maintained is a strong sense of community. “People know their neighbors and look out for each other here,” Sinclair says. “When they see you put up a for sale sign, they want to know who is buying the house. I’m always getting asked by people next door and across the street.”

Midcentury charmers meet new construction gems

There are mature trees in virtually every backyard in West Savannah, giving the streetscape a lush look despite smaller lot sizes. Homes that date back as far as 1900 can be found along these streets, and there are plenty of midcentury charmers as well, built in the 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60s. The majority of homes here are ranch-style houses and bungalows, but there’s an eclectic variety of builds, including shotgun-style and two-story residences. New construction has begun cropping up around the neighborhood as well. “It’s mainly an older neighborhood, but now it’s becoming new again,” Sinclair says. List prices in West Savannah range from $45,000 to $336,000. “A new construction three-bedroom, two-bathroom house here is going to be around $215,000,” Sinclair says.

Brock, III Elementary, rated C-plus by Niche. Next, they can go to Mercer Middle, located 6 miles south of West Savannah and rated a C by Niche. Woodville-Tompkins High is the last stop on this K-12 line, rated with an A-minus and ranked as Chatham County's No. 3 best high school by Niche. This high school has a strong athletics program with cheerleading, soccer, volleyball, cross country, basketball and more. "I went to Woodville-Tompkins High School," Sinclair says. "We used to be the worst in sports, but that isn't the case at all anymore. Complete change. The basketball team's undefeated right now."

Fellwood Park and the Moses Jackson Community Center

In the heart of the neighborhood, Fellwood Park and the Hudson Hill Community Center offer West Savannah residents plenty of options for recreation. Bordered by a paved walkway, the park has a playground shaded by leafy trees and a wide-open green space perfect for kicking a ball around or having a picnic. Across the street, the community center has a community garden, another playground and programs for locals. It’s also the West Savannah Community Organization’s spot for monthly meetings. The greens of Mary Calder Golf Course aren’t far from the neighborhood, either. Its 9-hole regulation-length course has been a city staple since 1937.
