Scarsdale's first suburban community
Arthur Manor, 26 miles from New York City, was Scarsdale’s first suburban community. Advertised as an oasis from urban living, Arthur Manor remains a gridded suburban area with crisply painted homes on stretches of manicured lawns. “Because of the proximity to town and how it’s laid out, It lends itself to being a tight-knit community where neighbors help each other," says Heather Harrison, a real estate agent with Compass who grew up in the area. "It’s really old-fashioned in that sense.” Scarsdale has strict zoning laws keeping commercial businesses restricted to commercial areas, but there is a gas station on Post Road, restaurants near the train station and shopping along Wilmot Road and Weaver Street, 4 miles away. The construction of Arthur Manor in 1891 led to the suburban transformation of the once-rural Scarsdale, making the town what it is today.
