The core of Scottsdale

Set west of the McDowell Mountains, Old Town Scottsdale is a commercial and cultural hub that’s teeming with shopping, dining, arts and entertainment about 12 miles east of Phoenix. The neighborhood offers luxury condos and single-family homes, typically all within walking distance of local businesses and shopping centers. “I would live there if I could afford it,” says Josiah Miller, a Realtor with Josiah Miller Homes and a Phoenix-area local. “A lot of people don’t live here. They come in from the surrounding areas and hang out on the weekend. It really is a lifestyle, like Beverly Hills.” The neighborhood’s part of the highly rated Scottsdale Unified School District, and folks have easy access to Route 101, about 2 miles east. “There are a lot of young professionals in the neighborhood,” says Justin Baker, a Realtor with My Home Group Real Estate and over 20 years of experience. “The bars, the restaurants, the shopping—all that attracts a younger crowd, but it’s still a relatively upscale area.” Summer temperatures regularly top 100 degrees, so private pools are sought after, and air conditioning is a must. The overall CAP Index Crime Score is 7 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4.

Countless dining and shopping opportunities

Old Town Scottsdale’s known for its commercial appeal, so shopping and dining are found throughout the neighborhood. “You’ve got all the bars, restaurants and nightlife,” Miller says. Folks will find cuisines from around the world and eateries for every occasion along the tree-shaded, sidewalk-lined streets. Morning Squeeze is popular for a Sunday morning brunch, while family-owned Los Olivos is a date-night spot for authentic Sonoran-style Mexican fare. To end a night out, The Rusty Spur has been a Scottsdale staple for over 70 years and features live country music every night in a neon saloon setting. Set with polished marble floors and colored by natural light, the Scottsdale Fashion Square is one of the most popular shopping destinations in the Phoenix metro area. “It’s probably one of the nicest malls I’ve ever been to. They pretty much have every luxury store you can imagine,” Miller says. Shoppers will find brands like Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Balenciaga, as well as family entertainment like Build-a-Bear Workshop, Harkins Theatres and Wonderspaces, a rotating modern art exhibit. “It’s just fun to walk around,” Miller says. Folks will also find a variety of locally owned boutiques, antique stores and other small businesses throughout the neighborhood, especially around Scottsdale Road and 5th Avenue. There’s a Sprouts Farmers Market, a chain grocery store, in the neighborhood’s northeast, and from October through May, folks can grab groceries at the Old Town Scottsdale Farmers Market. “You could spend your entire life here and a lot of people do,” Miller says.

Getting around from Old Town Scottsdale

Route 101 is the nearest highway, which is 2 miles east and leads south to Mesa and Chandler, 11 and 18 miles southeast, respectively. Route 101 also merges 6 miles south with Route 202, granting easy access around the Phoenix metro area. While most locals drive, the neighborhood’s known for being pedestrian-friendly; streets are lined with sidewalks, bike lanes and Valley Metro bus stops. Residents may also hail a Waymo, a self-driving car service in Scottsdale. “Waymo is how most people get around. I’m too scared to trust a self-driving car, but people seem to like it,” Miller says. HonorHealth Scottsdale Osborn Medical Center is less than a mile south, and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is about 8 miles southwest.

Events along the waterfront

The waterfront is a popular setting for community celebrations like the Italian Festival in October, which features a variety of Italian foods, wines, art and fashion; there’s also lots of live music and dancing to set the mood. At the Waterfront Fine Art and Wine Festival in February, locals can admire the work of local artists and enjoy a selection of curated wines and chocolates by the tree-lined waterfront. There’s also an Art Walk on Thursdays, which takes folks around the neighborhood’s art galleries and live entertainment. At the Scottsdale Stadium, spring training home of the San Francisco Giants, baseball fans can catch major league games from February through March. “Old Town is a tourist destination,” says Baker. “So, you’ll see plenty of tourists in the area. And that adds to the energy that’s already there.”

Golf, fish and more at Papago Park

Old Town Scottsdale is an urban area, so there aren’t many green spaces in the neighborhood. Along the tree-lined waterfront, folks can enjoy the sights and sounds of Old Town Scottsdale’s art and businesses while walking the 4-mile Arizona Canal Trail. “The thing people do here is golf. That’s what they do to get fresh air, and we have some of the world’s best golf courses,” Miller says. Folks can hit the links 3 miles southwest at Papago Golf Club’s 18-hole course set in the scenic 1,500-acre Papago Park, known for its desert mountain views and miles of multiuse trails for hiking and biking. The park also offers a fishing lake stocked with trout and sunfish and access to the Phoenix Zoo and Desert Botanical Garden. At the latter, there’s a diverse collection of over 50,000 plants from around the world, including a wide variety of native flora, like desert marigolds and saguaro cacti.

Highly sought-after single-family homes and condos

Most of the housing options here are condos from the 21st century with one to two bedrooms, typically set along sidewalk-lined city streets that are within walking distance of shopping and dining centers. Condo communities have monthly homeowners association dues that range from $200 to $4,000 and go toward security and community maintenance; shared pools, fitness centers and assigned parking are typical perks. “We don’t have a lot of towers in Arizona, but because the real estate value has gone up so much, they’ve started to build luxury condos,” Miller says. Luxury high-rise apartments often offer special amenities, like concierges. Prices for one-to-two-bedroom condos typically range from $300,000 to $700,000, depending on size and features, and prices for high-rise condos range from $1 million to $4 million, depending on the community. Single-family homes in Old Town Scottsdale are in limited supply and highly sought-after. In the neighborhood’s south, mid-to-late 20th-century ranch-style homes are the norm, set along residential streets laid out on a grid. All homes have three to five bedrooms and sit on lots of about 7,000 square feet; yards are typically manicured lawns with lush greenery, like rosewood and tall palm trees rising over rooftops. Concrete driveways leading to carports are typical, and features like private pools, attached garages and covered patios are desirable additions. Prices typically range from $700,000 to $1 million, depending on a home’s features. There are also a handful of 21st-century contemporary homes throughout the neighborhood, characterized by their sleek, modern appearance with clean lines and glass exteriors. These homes have three to five bedrooms and often include luxury features like guest houses, sprawling pools and balconies with sweeping city or mountain views. Prices typically range from around $2 million to $5 million.
