A gated community around Troon Mountain

Situated about 21 miles north of Scottsdale, Troon Village is a collection of gated subdivisions near mountains and golf courses. The Southwestern-style homes here sit around Troon Mountain, and they're surrounded by the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, which has over 225 miles of hiking trails. “People are drawn here by the landscape and the views,” says Kris LaCroix, a Realtor with Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International Realty who’s sold homes here for 26 years. “The natural beauty is really impressive. Pinnacle Peak Park trailhead is right here, and a little further west is Tom’s Thumb.” Troon Country Club, a private golf course, is within the neighborhood, and other public and private courses are nearby. The overall CAP Index Crime Score is 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4. Nearby houses of worship include Highlands Church and Living Water Lutheran Church.

Southwestern-style homes on Troon Mountain

Troon Village’s late 20th-century homes here embrace Southwestern style, with earth-toned stucco exteriors, clay-tiled roofs and desert landscaping that blends seamlessly with the surrounding McDowell Mountains. Many homes are built along the base of Troon Mountain in the neighborhood’s center and are elevated enough to see the city lights at night. Most homes sit on quarter-acre lots and have in-ground pools and outdoor entertainment areas. Prices vary by renovations and size; homes with between 1,500 and 2,100 square feet typically cost from $550,000 to $850,000, while those with 2,200 to 3,000 square feet can cost from $950,000 to $1.7 million. Layouts with 3,000 to 4,800 square feet can range from $1.2 to 3.7 million, and those with 4,900 to 7,700 square feet can go for $2.5 million to $4.5 million. Monthly homeowners association fees cost from $50 to $180 and cover street maintenance. Two- and three-bedroom townhouses are also available and cost between $575,000 and $850,000, plus monthly HOA fees between $370 and $410 that cover cable television and exterior maintenance.

Hiking Tom’s Thumb and Pinnacle Peak

The over 30,000-acre McDowell Sonoran Preserve is to the north, east and south of the neighborhood and includes 225 miles of trails through the Sonoran Desert. “There’s great hiking everywhere,” says Connie Edelman, an associate broker with Compass who’s sold homes in the area for 30 years. “People come up from the Valley to hike Tom's Thumb and Pinnacle Peak.” While Troon Mountain in the neighborhood’s center may tempt some adventure seekers, hiking is banned here due to dangerous conditions. The 34-acre George “Doc” Cavalliere Park is a less rugged way to get outside; kids can burn off some energy on the shaded playground and basketball courts. Several public and private golf courses are nearby. Troon Country Club is within the neighborhood; members have access to fitness classes, social events and the golf course, which is a Certified Audubon Sanctuary. The private Estancia Club is also nearby, as are public courses like Grayhawk Golf Club and Troon North Golf Club.

Spring training at Salt River Fields

Residents can head to Carefree for the annual Winter Carefree Fine Art & Wine Festival, a three-day juried art show that’s brought over 155 artists and artisans to the town each January since 1993. Each February and March, baseball takes over the Phoenix metro area during Major League Baseball’s spring training. Fans can head about 15 miles south to Salt River Fields at Talking Stick to watch the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Colorado Rockies play practice games.

Dinner with a view at Pinnacle Grille

“Within five to 10 minutes, there’s plenty of restaurants and grocery stores, or you can go north about 15 minutes to Carefree,” LaCroix says. Just north of the neighborhood, Pinnacle Grille offers American comfort food with views of Pinnacle Peak. At Mastro’s Steakhouse to the west, diners can enjoy a more upscale meal, as long as they follow the restaurant’s strict dress code. Carefree is about 12 miles north and is home to restaurants like English Rose Tea Room and local specialty stores like Watson’s Hat Shop. Nearby grocery stores include AJ’s Fine Foods and Sprouts Farmers Market.

International Baccalaureate at Cactus Shadows High

Local kids can attend school at Desert Sun Academy and then continue to Sonoran Trails Middle; both earn an A-minus from Niche. At the B-rated Cactus Shadows High, students can join 20 sports teams, including the nationally competitive cheer team. There are also 30 clubs, like the Cultural Student Union and Science Club. The Career and Technical Education program has courses in business and video production, and kids can also enroll in International Baccalaureate courses.

About 7 miles from Loop 101

Loop 101 is about 7 miles south of the neighborhood, leading about 21 miles to Scottsdale; residents can take Loop 101 west to state Route 51 to get to downtown Phoenix, around 32 miles away. With no public transportation, bike lanes or sidewalks, residents rely on their cars to get around. HonorHealth Scottsdale Thompson Peak Medical Center is 7 miles southwest, and Mayo Clinic Hospital is about 11 miles away. Scottsdale Airport, a general aviation airport with no commercial flights, is roughly 10 miles southwest, and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is a 30-mile trip.

Wildfires managed by the Scottsdale Fire Department

Troon Village has a moderate risk of wildfires because of its proximity to the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Fires occur regularly in the preserve, and the Scottsdale Fire Department quickly contains them. The Rio Fire in 1995 was the last major fire in the area, and no homes were damaged. There are six fire stations within 6 miles, and residents can download the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management’s app to receive fire alerts.
